Jody Easterbrook and Caryn Dodd left the mansion in Pacific Heights as soon as they received their orders. Jody drove the black SUV with the bulletproof windows and enough horsepower under the hood to give the racers in the Indy 500 a run for their money.

Both were African-American women in their late twenties who had past histories with the armed forces and civilian police. Unlike Sara and Frannie who had not been trained in combat, Jody and Caryn were experts in hand-to-hand, weaponry and reconnaissance. They belonged to an arm of the organization that the other operatives hoped they’d never have to call upon but were thankful to have at their disposal when they needed them.

In the Mustang, Sara checked her rearview mirror once more and announced, “There’s a silver Mercedes that’s been behind us ever since we left Glen Ellen.”

Frannie didn’t turn to look behind them. She used the mirrors. “Yeah, I noticed it. Don’t get paranoid yet. We’re not the only ones on 101 that are headed to San Francisco. It’s a big city.”

It was too late to tell Sara not to be paranoid. She’d been way past that ever since Elizabeth had confessed she might have told someone where she was. This was new to her. Over one hundred missions, and none of the charges had revealed their location to anyone. She didn’t blame Elizabeth. She was sure that it had been a slip-up on her part. She had known she was supposed to be very careful. Anyone could make a mistake. Unfortunately, this mistake could get them all killed.

In the silver Mercedes, Sean prepared to slow down. Ahead, cars were entering the toll booth.

“Here’s our chance,” John said. “If she gets across the bridge she can get lost in the city. Sean, let me shoot a tire out now before she slows down.”

“No, John!”

John withdrew his gun, an automatic with an elongated barrel. He’d paid a pretty penny to have it custom-made. It was highly accurate and packed quite a punch. He could feel the recoil all the way up his arm to his shoulder.

“I’m doing this for you, Sean,” he said as he took aim.

Coming in the opposite direction, Caryn spotted the red Mustang. Taking her field glasses, she identified Sara Minton as the driver and Frannie Anise in the passenger seat.

“Got ’em,” she told Jody. She scanned the area, and that’s when she saw a man with a gun leaning out the window of a Mercedes, preparing to fire. However, the driver of the Mercedes started swerving, and the shooter could not get off a shot.

“Perp at twelve o’clock,” Caryn said as she smoothly raised a rifle with a scope on it and aimed at the shoulder of the shooter. She fired and scored a solid hit with one round. The man dropped the weapon out the window.

Bedlam in the Mercedes. Seeing his brother shot, Sean panicked and ran into the RV in front of him. He reached for his brother, but since John
