The Work is The Work
Working an accident is much like triage during a war, or a train wreckâsometimes small and manageable, and other times, spread over an area the size of a football field, or larger.
Being high up in a cab of a large truck can give a better advantage to see across a large area of carnage. With the shorter truck than his usual, Hooker chose to first drive up on a small hill.
He saw no other way to get to the back of the accident, so a short stop on the way to working the accident from both ends seemed like a great idea.
âFudge⦠still not good enough.â Hooker hit the steering wheel.
The Squirt snorted with a smileâhe understood Hookerâs frustration. âDonât blame the tool; blame the person who isnât using it right.â
He slithered through the window and stood on top of the cab before Hooker figured out what he was doing.
As Hooker worked his way out of his window and onto the top of the truck, the Squirt had already started mapping the large accident. The report of only fourteen cars needed updating.
âWeâre going to have to take out some fence, but we need to get down at least where the white van is on its side. The best would be to use the field we used last year to stash a bunch of cars. Itâs only a half-mile down the road, but I remember it wasnât even half-full with seventeen cars. We can just do a pass-through and drop them as we feed through the line-up.â
Hooker scanned the length of the whole wreck. âWhat about the other end?â
The Squirt laughed. âDo you see who the chip is?â Micha. âKnowing him, heâll make any of the rigs coming down the 101 grab a tow and leave. If they head up Blossom Hill and stash a car or three, they will be smarter than I think.â
Hooker smiled at the kid but pointed at a distinctive auto club rig. âThereâs the stash king himself. How do you like Aceâs new rig?â He pointed at a five-ton truck similar to the one they stood on.
The Squirt snorted with a laugh. âHow big is his engine?â
Hooker laughed. âThey thought they got a monster at just under four hundred horses.â The Squirt and Hooker both knew they stood on closer to five-hundred and was still a wallowing pig.
The kid laughed again. âLetâs go jerk some prom queens out of this barn dance.â
