I pulled into the driveway, turned off the engine, and snatched the keys out of the ignition. For once, I wanted an unbroken day where I wouldn’t have to be greeted by the rage that dwelled inside me. I wanted to wake up without this heavy burden that seemed to be implanted on my shoulders and live like the rest of the people in the world. Shit, that wasn’t going to happen anytime soon because there was no time machine that would transport me back ten years so I could be the man I was supposed to be. There was only one person who was at fault for that and that was Jerald aka JP, my father.

I stalked up to the front door and knocked with force. Seconds later, my mother, who had changed her name to Val, answered the door. Her face lit up as I stormed past her.

“Hey, son, I've been hoping you would return my calls but seeing you is even better,” she gloated.

I mean mugged my mother, wishing I could reciprocate the same excitement in seeing her, but I couldn’t. I had just found out I had a daughter that had been growing up without my presence. I was enraged that my kid thought I was dead and that I had left Kanai to raise her alone. Hearing her utter those words wounded me worse than a right hook ever could. I felt like a failure and just like the last ten years, none of this shit was my cross to carry.

Suddenly, I felt his presence walk into the living room. My eyes shot over to my pops as he leaned against the wall with his hands inside his slacks. No one in my life knew about my parents’ existence except my sister. I kept them at arm’s length and never spoke of them because well, I didn’t want to.

“Why are you here?” Jerald asked.

I snorted, shaking my head, not appreciating the attitude I’d recognized once he entered the room.

“You wanna know why?” I tilted my head. “Well, I just found out that I have a nine-year-old daughter that has been thinking I'm dead. That’s why I'm here!”

Val gasped before covering her mouth.

“Yeah, I had the same damn reaction,” I snarled.

“W-where is she?” she stammered. “Who’s the woman?”

“So, you mean you were out there fucking some lil’ girl raw at sixteen?” Jerald had the nerve to ask.

I chuckled but there wasn’t shit humorous about it. “Yeah it was around the same time your ass was snitchin’ on the whole hood,” I retorted, ready for him to say more slick shit so I can get on his ass.

Jerald smirked before clapping his hands. “You gotta get something else to use Mikhail, that shit is getting old now.”

“I don’t have to get shit. Did you not just hear me say, you made me miss out on my kid’s life?! I didn’t get to see her go through nothing and it’s all because of your coward ass!”

My mother approached me with her hands held out.
