Chapter 17

Switching the golf cart lights on, I see the long, wide ramp leading down to the tunnel below. I pull inside and down the ramp. Turning in my seat, I wait for him. Jarett glances around and then walks in, closing the doors behind him. He turns on a flashlight he pulls from the backpack, and I switch the cart and its lights off. His voice echoes off the tunnel walls as he says while reengaging the lock from the inside, “I re-locked the doors to keep from arousing suspicion.”

The tunnels are just like I remember them—dark and dank. I have no idea why Matt thought it was romantic to sneak in here. I guess it was the forbidden aspect that made it appealing.

My eyes slide over to study Jarett as he pulls another flashlight from the backpack. He passes it to me, and his strong fingers brush across mine. I tremble with the thought of his arms pulling me close to him earlier, and his lips, warm and full on mine. I don’t want to be attracted to this complicated and dangerous man, but my body clearly has other ideas.

I need to get out of this dark, private tunnel. Now.

“Let’s get this done so we can get back to my grandpa.”

He salutes me and takes off walking toward the north. I fall in step beside him.

My thoughts pinball around in my mind, alternating between Jarett kissing me earlier and the risks of this insane plan I have concocted. We walk in silence for five minutes, with only the sound of our footsteps bouncing around the tunnels and water rushing through pipes. We both glance over our shoulder periodically.

As we near the first junction, Jarett turns to me. “Your grandpa will be okay.”

I wince, surprised in the middle of a thought about that kiss. “Thank you,” I murmur. Let him think it’s only thoughts of Grandpa troubling me.

“You’re close, the two of you, huh?”

“He’s the only family I have left. And to be honest, even before my parents died, we were close. We’re wired the same way, Grandpa and I.”

“Yeah, I can see that.” He smiles my direction. “Which way?”

“We need to head east up at the junction, and then we’ll be able to go north again.”

After we make the turn, Jarett says, “I was close with my grandfather as well.”

“Are you like him?”

“In some ways, yes. In other ways, I’m…more like my dad.” I’m guessing he doesn’t want to continue that line of conversation, as he immediately asks, “So, Jasper has dementia, huh?”

“Yeah. He told you on the phone when he called for your help?”

“He did. But he seems pretty with it to me.”

Thinking about his dementia progressing, the dark walls of the tunnel squeeze in around me and claustrophobia attacks my senses. Panic threatens to carry me away before I battle it back, in the same way I’m using this flashlight to combat the darkness.

“It’s…early stage,” I reply through a tight throat.

“He’ll—”

The heavy sound of a door
