Stop them!
Day 2—March 12 | A little later
It was only a moment after the two had steeled themselves and set off for the reactor building when the phone from the ERC rang in the control room.
“There’s white smoke coming out of the ventilation stack. Is the control room OK?”
White smoke coming out of the stack? Izawa paled as he took the call. He’d instantly sensed danger.
The ventilation stack is, as its name suggests, a chimney for expelling air from inside the reactor building. If it were simply the exhaust from the air-conditioning it would be no problem. But there remained the possibility that something serious was going on in there. And people were on their way into the building at that very moment.
“Stop them!”
Izawa was surprised at his own vehemence. He meant of, course, the two who had just departed for the reactor building.
The first to react were assistant shift supervisor Katō and his immediate superior, deputy shift supervisor Homma. The moment Izawa bellowed, Homma, who was the nearer to the door, grabbed a flashlight and a mask and dashed out.
“Stop those two!”
By the time Izawa had re-worded his command, Homma was out of the door, pulling on his mask as he raced off with Katō in pursuit. If the incursion team managed to enter the reactor building, it would be too late to stop them.
They didn’t know what the problem was. All they knew was that the ERC had called them on the hotline to say that something was going down, and shift supervisor Izawa had yelled “Stop them!”
There was no doubt it was an emergency. That was why Homma had dashed out of the control room.
Homma reminisced, “The urgency in Izawa’s voice was incredible. As soon as he took the call from the ERC he hollered ‘Stop them!’ so we knew something had happened and they had to be stopped. We didn’t know what the reason for stopping them was, though. Just that they had to be stopped. They’d left only a few minutes before, so we should be able to catch up with them, I thought. We set off after them.
Homma had an idea. If he took a short cut through the changing room on the second floor and then cut through the warehouse, he’d be able to catch up with them. Sure enough, as he came out and ran down the stairs he could see their backs ahead of him.
“Stop! Stop!” he roared at the top of his voice, but the sound didn’t reach them. Oblivious inside the protection of fireproof suits, breathing apparatus and full-face masks, they hurried on. There was no way they could have heard him, however loud he shouted.
“O-o-o-o-oy! Wait!” he yelled again, still running.
When he finally caught up with the pair, they were fifty meters from the reactor building doors. Kazuhiro Yoshida and Hirano were walking. They’d been held up climbing over a pile of cabinets that had been toppled by the earthquake and tsunami. That was the only reason Homma had been able to catch up.
