Chapter Six
Lola
I sit in the back of the SUV while a big buff older man drives and doesnât say a word. Itâs a bit unsettling how calm and quiet he is, but I guess Iâm used to the chaos around me at my job. Or maybe itâs the fact that Iâm sitting next the only man I let get close to me and I want to climb into his lap again.
âSo, when youâre not volunteering to be my wife and babysitting for assholes, what do you do with your time?â
âIâm actually in my final year in college. Iâll have a degree in child development to become a grade school teacher.â
âThatâs great.â He looks like itâs not such a great idea, but I donât say anything about it because the man is rich and being a teacher probably doesnât pay enough even to meet his standards.
âDo you have a school youâd like to teach at? A city you plan to live in while you teach?â
âNo. I havenât figured that out yet. I have until May before I graduate, but I figured it would either be here or in the city.â He nods and then smiles.
âWhat are we doing for Christmas?â
âWe? I was supposed to go to my parents.â
âDo you think they wonât want to meet their future son-in-law?â
âI think weâre moving fast, and theyâre going to be questioning it.â
âThatâs fine because Iâm not going anywhere, so they can grill me all they want, but I donât want to miss out on our first holiday together.â
A smile spreads over my face. âOkay.â
âGood.â He kisses the back of my hand and takes it into his, holding it until we arrive at his apartment.
âSon of a bitch,â he blurts out.
Standing in front of the enormous building is a woman dressed in the finest, expensive clothes. Everything about her screams wealth, but thatâs not whatâs silently screaming at me. Itâs the tension rolling off Trent.
âMy motherâs here.â
âOh.â
âIt will be fine.â
He steps out first and then takes my hand in his, helping me out. Before he can even introduce us, she throws her arms around me and squeals, âAbout time.â
âMother.â
She releases her hold on me only to stare at her son with an icy glare that he must have adopted. âDonât you mother me, Trenton. Iâve been waiting for you to find a woman finally, and you just went and scooped her up. I might actually have to believe in Santa after all these years because this is one Christmas miracle.â
âSo tell me all about you, my dear.â
âMother, we were just about to have dinner.â
âGood, Iâm starving. After I saw the news, I just couldnât wait to get over here and meet this precious thing. Can I say just how adorable you both look as Santa and Mrs. Claus? Too perfect.â
âOkay. Letâs take this to the condo.â We head upstairs, and sheâs clinging to me, asking every basic question in the world, while Trent looks on with a grumpy huff, arms crossed, and itâs totally sexy. I want to throw my arms around him and kiss away the frown.
