Chapter 31

While he waited, Grant returned to the agents, then took a knee in front of Salzman. But before he could question him, Salzman asked, "What the hell happened to the Mossad team?"

"Three of them were killed."

"Oh, fuck," Salzman mumbled, dropping his head back. But then, he looked again at Grant. "Wait! Three? There were supposed to be four at that meeting!"

"Did you see four when you arrived?"

Salzman shook his head. "No. Clint was in contact with Neman, who had given us the all clear to proceed to the house. We saw her in the doorway when we pulled up."

"Sorry, sir, but we only found three males."

Salzman's surprised look immediately worried Grant, especially after Salzman asked, "You mean you haven't found her here, or anywhere?"

"No, sir."

"I told you when we last saw her." Salzman looked overhead as if in thought. "She was in the doorway." He turned toward Beatty. "Clint, didn't you say you had eyes on someone behind her?"

"I did. One male, but he moved out of sight as we got closer."

That had to be an Iranian, Grant thought.

Salzman continued, "We'd just gotten out of the vehicle when the attack began. I didn't see her after that. Once the firefight ended, we were blindfolded. What I do remember was one of the Iranians ordering that we all be put in our vehicle, and he also ordered that the others return to their vehicle. We all ended up here. Dammit! What'd they do with her?"

"I wish I could answer that, sir."

Beatty gingerly rested his head against the wall, and keeping his eyes closed, said, "I guess you know Agent Kaufman was killed."

"Yes, sir. His body was in the house. We called in a chopper. His and the Mossad men's bodies were transported to it. I don't know what other arrangements were worked out."

"Well, thank you for taking care of him . . . them."

"Our pleasure, sir."

Stalley tapped his shoulder. "Let me take look at him." Grant back away.

Several minutes later, Stalley motioned Grant toward the center of the room, then quietly reported, "I used butterflies instead of stitches on Agent Jacob's wound. The bleeding stopped, but he might be needing additional work. His cheekbone might have a hairline crack. Agent Beatty has a mild concussion, but otherwise, he checked out. Salzman checked out okay, considering. I gave all of them Tylenol. They'll get a thorough exam in sickbay."

"Okay, Doc. Listen, take pictures of the bodies, and the live ones. You can take some of the village on our way out." Stalley grabbed his bag, then left.

Grant returned to the agents, then took a knee in front of them. "I found a stockpile of weapons in the other room, Uzis, Mini-Uzis, Desert Eagles, Glocks, and a sniper rifle."

"We had the folding stock Uzis and the Glocks," Jacobs confirmed.

"No sniper rifle?"

"No."

"So that means the other weapons belonged to the Israelis."

"Sounds right," Salzman confirmed.

"And the leather satchels were yours?" Salzman nodded. Grant stood, and slid his hands into his pants' pockets. "If we've
