Hayes

"Hayes, you messed up the mashed potatoes," Leah tells me. She clucks her tongue in disappointment as she takes the bowl of runny mashed potatoes that I was just mixing on her stand mixer. "Did you only put one potato to a whole gallon of cream?"

"I followed your recipe," I exclaim, throwing my hands up. "You know I'm not a good cook."

"Our dads are turning over in their graves," she laughs. I smile. It’s been several years since our parents passed, so the sting is gone from her words. Just fond memories remain, and yes, our dads were great cooks. I didn’t inherit any of their skills.

"Hey, Thandie." Leah gestures to her roommate, and the other woman looks over at us. "Check this out." She tips the bowl and the mashed potatoes slosh.

Mashed potatoes aren't supposed to slosh.

Thandie throws her head back and laughs.

I have to admit, I did a shitty job of cooking. Or trying to, rather.

But if Thanksgiving dinner were dependent on me, we'd all starve.

It's because I can't get my mind off Ambrose. I fucked up with him. I know I did. And I've been in a zombie-like state ever since he broke things off with me. I don’t know if the toy went out on time. I don’t know if he was able to pull it off. After all, I’ve been seeing the posters in stores. I’ve often wondered how it’s going.

But he broke things off, and I’m respecting his wishes.

No, I remind myself. He didn't break things off. You'd have to be in a relationship for that to happen.

What he did was split the company we made together. And for good reason. I know that I was acting crazy.

Now I'm paying the price.

"What's happening in here?" Their ex-roommate, Brent, comes in through the doorway, his round belly showing that he's about five months pregnant. He beams at us, and his happiness is enough to make me sick. I've only met the guy a couple of times when he used to live with Leah and Thandie. He's a nice enough guy, and he works at the library with them, but I don't know if I can stomach his sugary sweetness right now.

He's in love. And Tanner is in the living room, and I've seen more than enough kisses to last me for a lifetime. Especially since I know that I'll never have anything like that.

"Nothing," Thandie says, shooing him away. "Nothing's happening in here. Go back out there and enjoy your time with Tanner." She winks at him. "Maybe give him the hint that you should name your baby after me."

"Or me," Leah pipes up, drawing my attention back over to her.

"Hey, wait!" I exclaim. "What are you doing?"

She pauses, as she's been pouring the mashed potatoes down the sink. Yeah, I know, mashed potatoes aren't supposed to pour either. "I'm saving Thanksgiving dinner," she says to me. "You're welcome. Go ruin something else."

I snicker and feel my hopes deflate.

Leah's face falls, seeing me react to her words.
