CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

SUTTON

When I stepped out of my bedroom on the third morning of waking up with Nicolai and the omegas in the house, I couldn’t stop the wide smile that spread over my face. Ayri’s laughter crossed the space from the kitchen, where he and Leith were cooking. Based on everything covering the counters, this wasn’t going to be a small meal.

Paradise wasn’t in her room this morning either. She was sitting at the table with Briar next to her. He sat closer to her than I’d seen she’d let anyone sit except Ayri. They were looking at what I presumed to be Briar’s phone screen and the way Paradise rocked slightly, I thought they must be wearing earbuds.

That left Nika to me. He was sitting in the living area on the couch facing where everyone was. A content smile on his face. His gaze didn’t stray far from Ayri, though he checked on Paradise every few minutes too.

Such a good alpha.

Licking my lips, I decided that maybe it was time to crank it up a notch. I could woo. Couldn’t I? I paused just behind the couch as I thought about this. Hell, Briar and Leith came after me. I didn’t really know how to woo.

That wasn’t going to stop me.

I walked by and stopped in the kitchen, pouring myself a cup of coffee as I listened to Leith give Ayri instructions on how to make eggs. The omega listened raptly, gaze intently focused on the pan that simmered with melted butter.

Leith looked at me, a pleased grin on his handsome face. Kissing his cheek, I left the kitchen, grabbing two scones on the way by.

Nika’s gaze moved to mine when I made my way to him. I sat next to him, closer than was necessary. His smile climbed slightly and did so again when I handed him a scone.

“Good morning, alpha,” I said as I got comfortable, letting my leg press against his for a second.

He chuckled. “Morning, Sutton.”

Nika went back to watching Ayri, but I watched him. He was so pretty. Hard and beautiful. Sexy. Sweet. I desperately wanted to taste his skin. Without the suppressant bracelet.

“They look like they’re having a good time this morning,” I said, taking a small bite of my scone.

He nodded, a quiet sigh leaving his mouth. “They do.”

“And you’re watching to make sure there isn’t even a hint of discomfort.”

Nika chuckled. “I can’t even pretend not to.”

“You’re a good alpha,” I said.

His smile faded and he closed his eyes. I didn’t miss the pained look that crossed his face. Leaning forward, I set the mug on the table, my scone next to it, and shifted so I could face him. “You are a good alpha,” I said again.

He looked at me and the emotion in his eyes not only said that he didn’t believe that, but also that he hurt.

I shifted closer, setting my hand over his where it rested on his leg. “From the minute you stepped foot into this apartment with them, their comfort was your only concern.
