Chapter Five

Tracey spent the remainder of the evening musing over the earlier conversation with Aaron. He really thought he could do it? Business... Marketing... To be honest, Tracey hadn't really pondered those courses. He knew what he wanted to do, sure. Perhaps he'd failed to consider just how he'd get there. And to think that Aaron -- gorgeous, charismatic, soccer captain demi-god -- thought he was smart enough to do it. However, Tracey somehow couldn't argue that Jess was right as well; sometimes he could be a bit dense."

What made the thought even more daunting was the very likely possibility that he just may be running into Aaron via a couple of classes. He honestly never figured the enchanting Alpha to be a bookworm. Such a dominant personality having such a zest for literature?

Tracey shook his head roughly and forced his thoughts away from the subject. Cruel as it was, logic always found its ugly way back to him eventually. Who was he kidding? No matter how perfect Aaron turned out to be every time they crossed paths, regardless of whether or not the Omega's wishful fantasizing could be accurate, he was setting himself up to crash hard. The falling part hadn't been nearly as painful as its aftermath was bound to be.

Pop would never accept it. No son of his was going to be bound to an Alpha -- a male Alpha, at that. There would be no diguising the truth, if that were to happen. All those years of carefully-constructed cover would be for naught. Tracey didn't think he could bear disappointing his father a second time in his life. Besides, he didn't think anyone would take too kindly to being deceived throughout the relationship -- if he ever ended up embracing who he really was. And even if he didn't, he'd be proving Jess right: living a lie for the rest of his years. He wasn't sure which was the worse evil.

Good Lord... Two more weeks and he'd proabably have classes with the one person he simultaneously couldn't get away from and couldn't get enough of. Suppressants or no, it was going to be a tough year.

"Pop, I'm locking up!" He called to the back room as he went about shutting off the lights. "I'll meet you out front!"

Deep down, Tracey didn't blame his old man for his sheltering behavior; he knew it was because he didn't want to see his only child subjected to the proper order of the hierarchy that their home town practiced. The life of an Omega wasn't exactly peaches and cream, at times. Everyone knew where the pecking order was -- and what to expect from others' demeanors. When it came down to it, it didn't matter how smart or skilled or gifted he was; he was the lowest in the strata. At best, he was a second-class citizen. At worst, little more than property to his respective mate. He knew his Pop wanted to spare him from that; after all, not even football legend Sly Collins's reputation could shield him from such a fate.
