Chapter Six

Eli barely tasted the bacon in his mouth. Hunter had been right on the mark though—the pancakes were amazing. What had Eli agreed to? He chewed on his last pancake slowly all the while aware Hunter never took his gaze off him. On occasion, Hunter stole glances at who entered the diner, and probably marked everyone there. It was part of Hunter’s jobs after all, but Eli knew there was only one thing preoccupying the killer’s mind—him.

Not that Eli’s mind thought of anything else. Tomorrow was uncertain. Eli didn’t have the first clue what to do about his future. Without Hunter, a protector to stand by him, could he really make it on his own?

Surely, there had to be other Omegas who found themselves in the crossroads like Eli. Some of them ended up in a horror story sure, but a percentage must have found a different path. The braver Omegas would have been able to stand on their own two feet without needing to rely on someone else.

Eli always thought of himself as strong. His near brush with death three days ago taught him that leaning on another person didn’t make him weak or a victim. Still, being on his own sounded a little lonely, but wasn’t that what he always wanted?

“Time to go,” Hunter said.

Eli stared at his empty plate. Where did the time go? The killer paid the check and ushered him out of the dingy diner. Like before, Hunter pressed a hand on his back, the motion possessive. It also made Eli feel safe from the stares of the other truckers. Alone, he’d never entered the diner in the first place.

“Rule number one, little Omega,” Hunter began.

Outside once again, Eli felt the cool breeze on his face.

“You have rules?” Eli couldn’t help but ask.

Hunter’s grin widened. The killer continued, “Tonight is about us. No thinking about tomorrows or other useless shit.”

Eli let out a nervous laugh. “Easy for you to say.”

“If you’re thinking about something else, it means I’m not doing my job.” Hunter walked over to the counter and paid for a room. The middle-aged man didn’t even look up from watching his tiny TV while he slid a key across the slot.

They found their room on the first floor, directly across the parking lot—convenient for a quick escape. Hunter slid the key in. The door knob rattled. It didn’t look like it could keep anything out, but then, why should Eli be afraid? He had Hunter and he felt safe with the killer. Thinking along those lines was dangerous, Eli knew, but he couldn’t help himself.

If he had a strong protective mate like Hunter, Eli would have nothing to be worried about. Okay, Hunter might lack a moral compass, but Eli could be the voice of reason. Oh hold on. Why was Eli thinking about the impossible?

They entered the room and Hunter flicked the switch on. The light illuminated a less-than-stellar room with peeling wallpaper and frayed carpeting. The bed looked decent at least.
