The lady’s information was very credible, but her price guaranteed that she and the other two women could stay with us instead of moving north. Aunt Olivia thought it was more than a fair trade. I explained my theories about everyone works and everyone fights. They had no issues with the rules.

Aunt Olivia caught me between the shed and the house. “Let’s keep the location of the supplies and the reason for our mission to ourselves until we get back.”

“I’m okay with that. I’ll round up Joe and Carl to go with us. Would you get Maria and Ollie to volunteer? Tell them we’ll leave just after midnight.”

I found Carl, but Joe was nowhere to be found. This bothered me since I had a standing order for no one to leave the ranch without my approval. I noticed several horses were gone from the barn and guessed he and some of the others were out riding fences.

I decided to take the Ford Lightning pickup and the Ford electric E350 high cube van for our mission. They had the range and hauling capacity to cover what we needed. They were also as close to silent as I could imagine. Traveling at night with the lights off would make them stealth vehicles. I still had to prepare for the excursion, so I went to the barn and checked our electric powered trucks. All were charged and ready to go. Honestly, I didn’t like them but really couldn’t find a valid reason. The batteries were sealed, so there was no acid level to check, and they didn’t have a radiator or oil dipstick to check. I did check the tire pressure, window washer fluid and brake fluid, finding all were at the proper level and pressure. I removed the courtesy lights from the inside of both vehicles and taped over the outside marker and brake lights with duct tape. I wanted to go and come back without ever being seen or heard. Then I loaded extra food, weapons and ammunition, as I tended to do if we had a more extended stay than planned.

Aunt Olivia came back with Maria and Celia in tow but no Ollie. “Jeff, apparently, Ollie, Joe and Alex left early this morning to check the fence line and that cabin east of here just past the ranch’s border. I brought Celia to help.”

Neither Joe nor Ollie had told me they were going out today. That worried me. I wondered what Aunt Olivia had told Celia. “Good choice. Celia, did Aunt Olivia fill you in on the mission?”

She smiled, and I was glad she was dressed in brown and Aunt Olivia in dark green. I couldn’t tell them apart. She patted her 9-mm pistol. “I’m ready and willing to help. Abel balked when I told him I was going, but I reminded him that I’m not a trophy wife. I’ve seen a bit of action in two wars and managed an Army jail for terrorists for two years. I know how to deal with asshats, thugs and gangbangers.
