CHAPTER THREE

Everything in Ivory wanted to leave, but Chloe convinced her to stay. There was no use in leaving now, anyway, since Tyler had already left. While Rihanna danced and rocked the halftime show, Chloe urged Ivory to join her in the kitchen.

“I’m so sorry, Ivory,” she said discreetly. “I didn’t think this would happen.”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“It does matter, because do you know what I saw just now?”

“What’s that?”

“I saw how much Tyler still loves you.”

“I know he still loves me, Chloe. That’s why I can’t understand why he won’t at least entertain the thought of having kids. Is having children so terrible?”

“Shoot—for some people it is, and I’m just being honest. Overall, I guess it would depend on your circumstances. Children require a lot of time and attention, especially when they’re younger. Tyler works full-time. You work full-time. Honestly, your lives are comfortable right now. Maybe a baby would mess that up for him. Or have you considered how his life was growing up?”

“I’m sure it wasn’t the best, but then again, was anybody’s?”

“Okay, you got a point there, but he obviously still loves you. You and Tyler are so good together. If your marriage can be saved, then try your hardest to save it so years from now, you’re not living with regrets.”

John comes over and quips, “You ought to be ashamed of yourself, Ivory, for breaking my boy’s heart and whatnot?”

“He’ll be alright, as usual.”

“I don’t know this time,” John says. “He was pretty ticked off.”

Ivory dropped her head and sighed. “I’m so sorry to drag y’all into this.”

“It’s cool—well, not for him, but—”

“Hush John,” Chloe told him.

“I’m trying to make a point,” he said. “Listen, Ivory—couples go through things, but I’ma tell you this in case you didn’t know—Tyler doesn’t want a divorce.”

“I’m aware of that, John, but I feel like the damage has already been done. The divorce is filed, we’ve been living apart for six months. Tonight was the first time we’ve spoken since then, and look what happened. But anyway, enough about it. I didn’t come over here for drama. I came to kick it with y’all and watch the game, so that’s what I’m going to do.

Ivory took her plate and returned to the living room, staring at the TV, but the game couldn’t be any further from her mind. Her thoughts took her to Tyler. He loved her. Maybe she was a fool to leave him over the baby issue. He didn’t want to make the sacrifice for her, but what if she – for the sake of their marriage – yielded and decided to forego what she wanted to make him happy?
