CHAPTER 23

TABATHA

The words are pouring from my head to fingertips like never before. I’ve decided to go with the flow for now in both the real world and my fictional one. It’s been a few days since Elena gave me the title idea and since Levi and I took our relationship to a whole new level. We haven’t done anything since, which I’m totally okay with. I want to—don’t get me wrong—and every morning I can tell he does too, but I’m glad it hasn’t taken over our lives.

I’ve found a new place to write, and I have to say the view is something else, and I’m not talking about the yard. When did Levi become a man? The last time we saw each other he was still doing keg stands and now he’s casually mowing the lawn like a domesticated older man. Sweat stains his tight gray T-shirt, and a red rag is tossed over his shoulder. With one hand he runs a hand through his floppy damp hair as he continues his path.

The sight of him makes my lower half respond in ways I never imagined it would over him. It’s no wonder he’s had so many women contacting him on those apps. Since I’ve had a taste, I’m not sure how to proceed from here and what it means for our future. He’s convinced we’ll be okay, and I believe him, but the self-doubt about all the people who have said they’d stay, only to walk out of my life, hits me.

I shake those thoughts and dive back into my book. I might be using the heat between Levi and me to fuel my fire, but hell if it makes me a best seller, I’m here for it. An author’s dream. A goal. I’ve hit the Amazon list, but one day maybe I’ll reach higher. I love what I do, but to achieve in my field would be good too.

I continue typing. My two main characters have decided to fake date and it’s going as smoothly as you’d think. Awkward fumbling of hands as they meet with their friends. And then I decided to have them bump their heads before going in for a public kiss. I smile as I write.

The tiny hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, and it’s only then I realize the mower has stopped. I have my earbuds on while listening to my writing playlist, The Calling’s “Wherever You’ll Go” blasts in my ear. There’s something pulling my attention away from the laptop. Averting my eyes, I find Levi is standing at the edge of his deck.

I lean back from my position hunched over the glass table and look at him. He wipes the sweat with the red rag and drags a hand through his hair again. Damp pieces fall into his face. His eyes are on me. Tugging out my earbud I can’t help my lingering gaze.

“How long have you been standing there?”

I pull out the other.

He chuckles. “Maybe three minutes…ish.
