Chapter 6

“Why does every mission end with me recuperating in someone’s bed?”

“Not any someone’s. Yours and Cerdic’s, and this is only the second time that I know of. I suppose it happens because you seem to put yourself in danger,” Leofric replied, amusement tingeing his words.

Tony slit his eyes open and rolled onto his side, looking at him in dismay. “What are you doing here?”

“Watching over you while the others clean up the mess we left behind.”

Dazed by the mage’s presence, and not yet fully recuperated from what had happened to him, Tony rubbed his hand over his face, trying to understand. “But…How did we get here?”

“Wulf and Daniel were kind enough to teleport us back before returning to Jandar’s hideout. My brother did not want you to awaken alone and ordered me to keep you company.”

“Oh.” Tony tried to process what Leofric was saying. “Why you, not him?”

“He felt it would be best if I was not there after seeing him slay Jandar.”

He let Leofric’s words sink in. “You did love him, despite what you told me,” he said softly.

“To my everlasting shame, I did. I never said otherwise. Even after…after everything that happened between us.” Leofric smiled sadly. “I was young, well, young for one of us. I was dealing with my growing powers and he was there to help, or so I thought. Never trust it when a mage offers you something without your asking. It can be very destructive. At least between mages it can. I fell deeply in love with him and he encouraged it until it was too late. When he told me why he had done so, I could not believe he could be that duplicitous.”

“I’m sorry. Not that means much I know, but I am. No one deserves what he did to you.”

Leofric gave a small shrug. “I am not the first to have my heart broken and I will not be the last. I survived. I learned from it and vowed it would never again happen to me.”

“Someday you might meet someone who will make you break your vow.”

“Doubtful, my romantic young friend.”

Tony heard footsteps racing up the stairs to the royal wing, the door slammed open, and bare seconds later Cerdic was in the bedchamber and at the bed, gathering Tony into his arms.

“You are alive. I was so afraid we had come too late.”

“A bit worse for wear, still, but well on my way to healing,” Tony replied. He didn’t get a chance to say more as Cerdic was kissing him, pouring all his love and relief into it. When it ended, Tony eased out of his husband’s embrace because he’d told the truth when he said he wasn’t fully healed, yet.

Cerdic quickly understood, taking Tony’s hands in his instead. He surveyed what remained of the deep wounds the dagger had inflicted, hissing in an angry breath. “If I could do it again, that bastard would have died slowly and painfully.”

“No. That is not you, my love. You don’t have it in you to make anyone suffer, no matter what they’ve done.
