THE NEW WORLD
âHe that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.â
-Matthew XXIV, 13
Berlin, Germany
November 13th
AFTER THREE HOURS, PORING over records Carl Blevins rubbed his eyes. âWarren Iâm going to the head.
The bored SEAL gave him a thumb up and went back to his German sports magazine.
Blevins stepped from the room into the musty hall, as he rounded the corner the small German man blocked his way.
âHerr Blevins,â the man smiled. âI donât think what you are looking for is here.â
âWhat am I looking for?â Blevins asked. âHow would you know?â
The German smiled wider. âNo time for that. Here is the man you need. He pushed a folded piece of paper into Blevinsâs hand. âI must ask you not to mention our little talk.â He patted Blevins on the shoulder turned and disappeared into the maze of hallways.
USS MIAMI SSN 755
With pack ice eight miles behind her, Miami slid toward the surface of a wind-whipped sea. At fifty-eight feet her communications mast slid up, piercing the angry sea.
âConn, radio, taking hits on the broadcast,â the radio operator reported.
âRadio this is the Captain. We canât get up any further. Would a course change help?â He steadied himself on the still housed attack scope.
âWe can try,â the radioman responded.
âOkay, weâll come around to the East. Iâll put the seas on the beam. Just be quick. Got some sailors are looking a little green.â
âWill do, Captain.â
Miamiâs rudder swung ten degrees to starboard. Her blunt nose turned, bucking and twisting as the ocean slapped at her.
âYou okay diving officer?â McKinnon watched the gyro slowly turn to the East.
âI have a ten pucker factor right now sir. Watch the angle,â he blurted at the planesmen.
The rolling doubled when her bow lined up with the waves. âSteady on course two-two-zero,â the helm reported.
âOkay radio weâre steady,â said McKinnon.
âWe have acquired the satellite,â the radio operator reported. âIn receipt of flash traffic, buffer printing.â
âSubject line?â McKinnon asked.
âOperational orders,â radio reported.
U-761
Edel trudged along the steel deck, his footsteps heavy and unsure. âCaptain,â he said softly.
Becker turned his head slowly, âEverything operating?â
âYes but how?â
âI donât know. Who started the diesels?â
Edel shrugged his shoulders. âAny luck with the radio?â
âNone,â Becker answered. âGerlach?â he whispered.â
âHeâs awake but weak.â
Becker rubbed his chin. âWhat now?â he asked mostly to himself.
Edel rubbed the thick stubble of his own chin, âHome?â
âWhen can we dive?â
âAn hour more on the batteries,â Edel responded.
Roth stepped through the control room hatch. âCaptain, Sturmbannführerr Gerlach asked for you.â
Becker looked at Edel. Again, their bond needed no words.
âTell him Iâm coming.â
âYes sir.â Roth ducked under the after control room hatch.
âI wonder how long we slept,â Edel commented.
âI donât know.â Their eyes met. âI do know we are alive.â
Becker went to the SS officer, and knelt next to him.
âSo it seems your experiment worked.â
âI donât know if it was all we had hoped for. How long?â asked Gerlach.
Becker rubbed his head. âI donât know. The ice has changed. It seems everything has changed.â
âWhat now?â
Becker stood. âWe go home.â
âIf there is a home to go to,â Gerlach managed, as his voice grew even weaker.
