Chapter 19
Selaphiel wiped the trickle of blood dripping from her elbow and determinedly ignored the other claw marks, bruises, severe burns, and tooth gouges she had collected during her trek through the fifth level of Hell. Her only consolation was that Nadiel had suffered a similar fate.
His silvery hair was matted on one side with blood; his lips split when a particularly nasty demon threw several jagged boulders in his direction. Their dark armour had protected them from the most grievous wounds, but their journey wasnât over yet. They still had to trek back to the portal, back to the eyrie.
âHe better be here,â she hissed to Nadiel.
Nadiel stood at the opening of the cave peering inside into the darkness beyond. âHe is here.â
She wondered at his confidence and the source of his information. How he knew that Luciferâs personal demon was here was beyond her. More than that, the potential revelation of the ninth level of Hell and the isolation cages had made her ground her teeth almost to dust. Knowledge was power and in this, Nadiel had more than an edge; he had the whole goddamn sword.
She made a mental note to have some of her allies keep a closer watch on his movements. If he caught one of them, she could always claim that it was Sirusâs minions trying to ferret out their plans.
She should also pay Ezriel a visit. What his broken mind could tell her, she didnât know, but perhaps in his vulnerable state, hovering painfully between darkness and light, she could torture some information out of him. Who knew what else was hidden in the ancient recesses of his mind? It would be a long time before Ezriel could ever join the higher ranks again. His humiliation at being partially turned back would be a stain on his otherwise fearsome reputation.
Nadiel moved deeper into the cave, and she followed.
The air smelt more rotten than usual. The sulphur that excreted off demons like a hideous perfume seemed exceptionally pungent. It was usually the case in the lower levels. Demons were much stronger, and the scent of sulphur became more intense when they gathered in groups.
They were in the fifth level of Hell, the lowest they were permitted to go. The sixth and seventh were deemed too high risk by the Lord of Hell. Not that some of them didnât venture down to the sixth anyway. Killing a demon from the sixth level of Hell could fast-track your way up the ranks of the Fallen.
If you made it back.
The risk of being trapped down there with a horde of demons eager to carve out their displeasure in numerous creative ways was enough of a deterrent to all but those who were the most ambitious or the most insane.
She was a bit of both.
It took her weeks to recover, knitting flesh and bone, but it had given her an unpredictable edge she relished. It wasnât long after that she became one of the leaders of the Fallen. She had toppled Hestien, who was still currently holding a grudge.
