Chapter 16
Bradley hadnât been able to stop thinking about last night. Not just about the sexâwhich had been incredibleâbut about Carissa giving him the pebble, a tangible sign of her commitment to him. Heâd hoped the weekend in Texas would prove that he was the right man for her, but heâd never expected things to work out so well.
âAre you going to tell me what this surprise is?â she asked.
Glancing at her, he grinned. âNo.â
Theyâd flown home earlier that morning, and now they were in his car headed to a pre-planned destination. Nerves surged in his stomach. What if this surprise was a bust? What if she didnât want to go where he was taking her? Then again, this surprise wasnât just for her, and making these plans would only solidify his place in her life.
She sighed and rolled her eyes, but a faint smile curved her lips. Moments later, Bradley turned onto Carissaâs street. She sat forward and peered out the windshield. He sliced a look at her, trying to gauge her reaction.
âMy surprise is my parentsâ house?â she asked and shifted in the seat to face him.
âWell, it is Sunday, and you have a standing family dinner obligation. I already talked to Cory, and he made sure your mom knew to expect two more. I hope thatâs okay.â He took her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze.
Carissa leaned across the console and kissed his cheek. âThank you.â She eased back into her seat. âBut now be honest. Did you do this for me, or are you trying to suck up to my dad?â
Bradley laughed. âBoth. I donât want your dad to hate me the way he hated your last boyfriend.â
âI donât think my father will hate anyone as much as he hates Danny.â She frowned.
Bradley had no idea what her frown meant, and he wasnât about to open that can of worms. As soon as theyâd landed, Carissa had turned her phone back on, and the damn thing made noise for a solid thirty minutes with one notification alert after another. She said a majority were from Danny, which Bradley didnât doubt, but to her credit, she hadnât read or listened to a single message. He wasnât stupid, though, and the moment he left her, sheâd wade through all those messages. Maybe he could figure out a way to spend tonight with her, too, just to prolong her having to deal with Danny.
âWhy does your father hate Danny so much?â Bradley slowed to a stop in the driveway.
âThe first time they met, Danny didnât make a great impression. He said a few things that my father felt were inappropriate. The stupid thing is, I donât even remember what Danny said.â She let out a humorless laugh. âAnd then Danny got me pregnantâ¦â
âRight.â Bradley cleared his throat, then killed the engine. âWell, Iâm pretty sure I made a good impression on your parents.â
Her face brightened. âYes, Iâm sure you did, too. Come on. Time to go face my family.â
She climbed out of the car, and Bradley met her near the front.
