Chapter 6:
Every American rifleman opened fire.
The fusillade showed as a flickering line of fiery muzzle-flashes that lit the gloom with stabbing blades of flame.
An instant later the whip-saw of chattering noise shattered the stunned Chinese compound and sent terrified half-dressed artillerymen scrabbling in terror.
Gillette watched the first moments of the firefight from the shadows of the tree line, exulting in the chaos. Then the second Javelin team fired and a few thumping heartbeats later another of the enemyâs self-propelled howitzers was obliterated in a vast fireball of smoke and flames. The explosion ripped the chassis of the PLZ-05 apart; disintegrating the steel beast in the blink of an eye. Black oily cloud roiled into the sky and a wall of searing heat washed across the compound. A Chinese crewman thirty yards away from the explosion was picked up and flung through the air like a rag doll, his clothes on fire, his chest gaping shrapnel wounds. Others, closer to the epicenter of the almighty explosion, were simply vaporized to black ash. A Chinese officer, drenched in blood and staggering like a drunkard, sagged to his knees. One of his arms had been severed. He hung his head, seemed to teeter for balance for an instant, and then fell face first into the dirt and did not move again. Another sandstorm of dust was flung into the air and the Americans lining the fringe of the woods fired into it, getting hits.
Then the men of 3rd Platoon, dug in along the eastern edge of the compound, opened fire on the camp tents, intensifying the fury.
Gillette heard the sudden swell of additional stuttering gunfire as he jinked back through the undergrowth and flung himself into the firing pit beside Tonneguzzi. The XO had his M4 carbine pressed into his shoulder, firing with the rest of the men at the flittering Chinese crewmen who swirled amongst the dust and smoke. Gillette threw up his own weapon and opened fire, sighting on an enemy soldier by one of the nearest howitzers. The man was on his stomach, half-hidden by leaping shadows, trying to scramble for shelter behind the steel tracks of the Chinese vehicle. Gillette fired and saw his bullets kick up small eruptions of dirt around the stricken Chinese soldierâs face. The man crawled out of sight and Gillette cursed bitter frustration.
The clock in his head began ticking; intuitively counting down the seconds and tracking the timeline of the firefight. He figured twenty seconds had passed since the first Chinese howitzer had been struck, and maybe ten seconds since the second heavy gun had been destroyed.
Surprise seemed absolute. The Chinese troops were off balance and scattering in terror. From somewhere, beneath the layer of gunfire, he could hear an enemy siren wailing and a frantic chaos of shouts and screams. Then the two M240 machine guns at the far end of the firing line added their fury to the crescendo of roaring death.
For the first few moments of the ambush the machine guns had remained silent, waiting for their opportunity.
