CHAPTER SIX

IT WAS 9 a.m. and Noel was nowhere in sight.

‘I’ll beep him,’ Jennifer decided. ‘He should have finished the ward round by now. I’ll use the phone at the main reception desk.’ She returned from making the call with a resigned expression.

‘Noel can’t make it,’ she told Tom and Amy. ‘The weasel’s thrown a huge wobbly about one of the patients and he’s insisting on taking her back to Theatre to realign her external fixation. It’s not a huge job but she has to have a general anaesthetic and a theatre won’t be available for at least half an hour.’

Tom checked his watch. ‘We’d better go now or we won’t be back in time for tennis. It’s a bit of a drive over to Governers Bay, isn’t it?’

‘About twenty minutes,’ Amy confirmed.

‘Let’s go, then,’ Tom suggested. ‘I don’t mind making do with a totally feminine opinion.’

Jennifer looked uncomfortable. ‘Noel asked me to meet him for a quick coffee while they’re waiting for Theatre.’ She smiled apologetically. ‘I said I would.’

‘My committee is deserting me,’ Tom sighed.

‘You and Amy could still go,’ Jennifer urged.

Amy could feel Tom’s watchful gaze. It settled on her face with a softness that belied the physical effect it engendered. Amy tried to ignore the shaft of sensation centred low in her abdomen. There would be no safety in numbers now. The double date had just halved. Was her reaction caused by nervousness…or excitement? Amy struggled to keep her expression nonchalant.

‘I think Tom wanted more than just my opinion about this house, Jen. Couldn’t you tell Noel you’ll meet him later?’

‘We’ll make another time,’ Tom cut in before Jennifer could respond. Amy’s heart sank like a stone. Tom wasn’t even hesitating in letting the opportunity to spend time alone with her pass. ‘For you and Noel to see the place,’ he continued smoothly. ‘It’s up to Amy. She’s the chauffeur. What do you think, angel?’ He touched her arm lightly, forcing her to meet his gaze directly.

‘It’s fine by me,’ she agreed lightly. ‘It’s a lovely morning for a drive.’

It was a lovely morning. The bright sunlight was only dimmed by the thickness of the pine plantation they drove through as they followed the road leading from the suburb of Cashmere and winding its way to the summit of the Port Hills. The force of the light struck with renewed clarity as they emerged to a view of the city and plains, bordered by the Southern Alps in the far distance. Tom drew in his breath at the sight.

‘I never appreciated how beautiful this city is,’ he said in wonder. ‘I was too young when I left.’

‘Just wait.’ Amy smiled. ‘We’re almost at the top. It’s the best bit.’

She slowed the car as they reached the apex of the road. With a startling contrast the view of the city and mountains was forgotten as the clear blue of the harbour and the flowing greenery of the peninsula hills and islands was suddenly spread before them. Smiling again at Tom’s stunned expression, Amy kept her speed down.
