Chapter Thirty-Two

“What if we adjusted the placement of the six runes on the floor?”

“Uh, I can’t imagine that would have any impact?” Mina said, staring at the spell constructs that were spread out on the floor.

Grabbing a piece of paper, Thorn began to sketch quickly.

“Hear me out. This is the current configuration. I think that the problem we are currently having is that the trace mana is actually getting stuck, preventing it from entering the main spell construct fast enough, which is in turn slowing the rotation speed. Your ice chains rely in part on the rotation speed to generate a suction force, so any reduction in the speed of the mana rotation is decreasing the pulling force on the space anchors.”

“Which in turn is allowing the vibrations to push the anchors out of position. Right, that makes sense. But what do we gain by moving the runes?”

“We know we can’t support more than six runes, and we need two runes on each of the anchors, but in our current configuration we are focusing their effect in a small space. What if we move one to the right wall, one to the left wall, and two to the ceiling? We can still generate the overlapped fields we need while covering all four of the anchors.”

“Oooh, you might be onto something there,” Mina said, her eyes gleaming as her mind began to spin.

Peeking through the doorway, Oberlin watched Mina and Thorn for a moment before letting out a sigh.

“Are they still at it?” Rolland asked from behind him.

“Yeah, though they certainly seem to be making progress. At least their tests are not exploding anymore.”

Walking to one of the tables that had been cleared off, Oberlin fished a treat out of his inventory and handed it to Akira who munched on it happily.

“Want something to drink?”

“Sure,” Oberlin accepted the cup that Rolland offered him. Shooing a small crystalline spider off of his stool, he sat down.

“So, this is the second time you’ve been in the Abyssal Lands, right?”

“Fourth, technically, but the first three times could be considered linked.”

“Oh yeah? How did you end up in this terrible place?”

Taking a sip of his drink, Oberlin set the cup down and smiled wryly.

“That’s a long story. A really long story. The upshot of it is that I came into the game with some, uh, baggage. And in order to try and ditch it, I fell in with a bad crowd. Well, one thing led to another and eventually I had to swipe something in the capital city. That led to even more things, including breaking into the royal treasury and stealing the pope’s globus cruciger. As you can imagine, they were not super happy.”

“That was you!?” Rolland’s jaw dropped in shock as he stared at Oberlin.

“Yeah, there was a bit of an uproar, so I took off for the southern continent, but had some, uh, trouble on the way. I needed a good way to get free of the people around me, so I made a deal with a Greater Devil who rules the Black Web.
