Voss turned around and picked up her fallen chair and set it back on its wheels. She pushed it under the desk. She asked, âWhat the hell is going on?â
I shrugged, and asked, âDid they tell you?â
âNo.â
âI like coincidence as much as the next guy, but two dead cops, who could be crooked,â I said, and paused a beat. âThey werenât supposed to be here in the first place, a potential missing girl, Saunt trying to blow his own brains out, and now an FBI agent secretly in town. Thatâs a lot of coincidence. Too much.â
âHeâs gotta be here because of the two cops. Maybe heâs here investigating them?â
âMaybe. It makes some kind of sense. Maybe they got wind of them somehow. But there could be more going on.â
Voss said, âCome on. Letâs go find him.â
âDonât forget about the girl. Whatever is going on with the FBI might help us, but we canât let her get lost in the shuffle. Itâs likely this FBI guyâs goal differs from our own.â
She nodded.
I said, âLetâs leave the camera to charge, but what about the Glock?â
Voss said, âWeâll lock my door. Donât worry. The stuff in here isnât going anywhere.â
âWhat about the crime scene? Thereâre shell casings, magazine, and the dead cops.â
âWith Howard at the hospital, Iâm too short staffed to worry about that now.â
âWhat about the desk guy? He can go sit on it?â
She half chuckled, and said, âNo way. Heâs not doing that. Heâs best here. Besides, I gotta have someone here. We left the crime scene alone this long. Itâll be fine.â
I nodded and thought about asking her about her former husband. Where was he now? Did he die in the line of duty? What happened to him? But I didnât. I took one last look at Vossâs wall of memories and the flag and turned and stepped out of the office.
Voss followed. She stopped behind me and locked her door. We walked through the deserted bullpen, passed the empty counter, and back to the entrance.
We passed Franklin, who stood up again and acted like he was going to salute Voss, but he only nodded and did the same to me. Voss took the lead and led us out of the building and to the parking lot. She stopped near a handicap ramp.
I asked, âWant me to take the truck?â
She glanced at Sauntâs Chevy and then at me. She asked, âWhy?â
âTwo vehicles are better than one.â
âYeah. Actually, maybe you shouldnât even come. I donât know this FBI guy. Iâve never met him before. So thereâs no personal or professional relationship built up. Itâll look bad having you there. What am I supposed to tell him? Hi. This is a guy I met years ago who doesnât remember me? Oh, and by the way, he was standing over the two dead cops. Oh and he is now helping me with the investigation.â
âYou could tell him the truth. If you wanted to. You donât have to tell him all of it. Just tell him I used to be an NCIS agent.
