Voss turned around and picked up her fallen chair and set it back on its wheels. She pushed it under the desk. She asked, “What the hell is going on?”

I shrugged, and asked, “Did they tell you?”

“No.”

“I like coincidence as much as the next guy, but two dead cops, who could be crooked,” I said, and paused a beat. “They weren’t supposed to be here in the first place, a potential missing girl, Saunt trying to blow his own brains out, and now an FBI agent secretly in town. That’s a lot of coincidence. Too much.”

“He’s gotta be here because of the two cops. Maybe he’s here investigating them?”

“Maybe. It makes some kind of sense. Maybe they got wind of them somehow. But there could be more going on.”

Voss said, “Come on. Let’s go find him.”

“Don’t forget about the girl. Whatever is going on with the FBI might help us, but we can’t let her get lost in the shuffle. It’s likely this FBI guy’s goal differs from our own.”

She nodded.

I said, “Let’s leave the camera to charge, but what about the Glock?”

Voss said, “We’ll lock my door. Don’t worry. The stuff in here isn’t going anywhere.”

“What about the crime scene? There’re shell casings, magazine, and the dead cops.”

“With Howard at the hospital, I’m too short staffed to worry about that now.”

“What about the desk guy? He can go sit on it?”

She half chuckled, and said, “No way. He’s not doing that. He’s best here. Besides, I gotta have someone here. We left the crime scene alone this long. It’ll be fine.”

I nodded and thought about asking her about her former husband. Where was he now? Did he die in the line of duty? What happened to him? But I didn’t. I took one last look at Voss’s wall of memories and the flag and turned and stepped out of the office.

Voss followed. She stopped behind me and locked her door. We walked through the deserted bullpen, passed the empty counter, and back to the entrance.

We passed Franklin, who stood up again and acted like he was going to salute Voss, but he only nodded and did the same to me. Voss took the lead and led us out of the building and to the parking lot. She stopped near a handicap ramp.

I asked, “Want me to take the truck?”

She glanced at Saunt’s Chevy and then at me. She asked, “Why?”

“Two vehicles are better than one.”

“Yeah. Actually, maybe you shouldn’t even come. I don’t know this FBI guy. I’ve never met him before. So there’s no personal or professional relationship built up. It’ll look bad having you there. What am I supposed to tell him? Hi. This is a guy I met years ago who doesn’t remember me? Oh, and by the way, he was standing over the two dead cops. Oh and he is now helping me with the investigation.”

“You could tell him the truth. If you wanted to. You don’t have to tell him all of it. Just tell him I used to be an NCIS agent.
