One afternoon in the morgue of the newspaper, a dusty interior room with bound volumes on sagging shelves, where I was reading through the clips on the Rockefellers and the history of Pocantico Hills, Harry Donsky came and sat on the little stool we used to reach the high shelves. “What’s up?” he asked. I told him about my letter to the Times and about the way they had asked me to cover the story. Since we were an afternoon paper, I explained to him, we would always have the story first. He had grounds to fire me. Instead, he smiled and put a hand on my shoulder for a second. “Blow us out of the water!” he said, and he laughed.

Other things happened in the two years I worked in Tarrytown. A particular Cuban set about seducing me. It took him a long time. There were lunches at the Hilton and lunches at the Cuban restaurant on Main Street, called the Ninth Inning because Cubans loved baseball. He had to convince me that we were in love, and he did. We slept together a few times, in my house in Armonk on the bed Robert and I had inherited with the place. It was awful when he was there and painful when he left.

The day the Rockefeller story broke was a day he was supposed to be there with me. “We need time together,” he would say, as he rushed off or I ran late for an interview. This was to have been our third afternoon together. I left the newspaper and eked out the story through phone interviews, one ear cocked toward the driveway where, I hoped, any second I would hear his yellow Oldsmobile crunch in on the gravel. Later he said he had tried to call me but my line was busy.
