— CHAPTER 14 —

“Can I have the day off again today?” I ask Markus the next morning, picking at my breakfast without eating much.

“You have to spend at least thirty minutes warming up. The rest is up to Grigory. He comes here at two.”

I give him a long, blank stare. “Why is he coming here?” And on a Saturday.

Markus pours more coffee into his mug and adds a splash of milk. “Because I’ve asked him to.” Leaning back in his chair, he takes a swig, watching me casually like there’s nothing odd about Grigory coming here.

“Was that what you talked to him about yesterday?”

“Part of it,” he says, being as vague as when he told me about Grigory’s ex the other day. Apparently, Grigory’s privacy is important to him.

“But isn’t this your day off?” Markus is away a lot during the week, so when I don’t shut myself in with the piano like last week, we usually spend the weekends together.

“I’m going for a cup of coffee with some friends I haven’t seen for a while. It will probably be a few hours, so the two of you will have some time on your own. You need to settle things after last week.”

“It’s not necessary.” I’d rather not see Grigory at all. “I’m fine.”

He gives me an are you kidding me look. “Sure, and fish can fly.” With a tsk-sound, he gets up and starts clearing the table.

“Markus, I really don’t want to see him.” I imbue the words with all the urgency I can muster.

Finishing his coffee, Markus sets the mug beside the sink with a clunk. “I really don’t care what you want at this point. The two of you need to work things out.” He turns to face me and leans back against the counter, hands pressed to the surface. “Grigory has been cranky all week, and you keep retreating to your little hidey-hole and poking at your food without saying a word. I’m frankly fed up with it. Both of you.”

“I’m sorry, Markus.” I feel terrible I’ve treated him this way. “I’ll start talking to you. I promise. Just please don’t make me see him. It’s not necessary.”

Markus scoffs and levels me with an irritated glare. “Right? You’ll just magically grow wings and fly up from that pit of yours, all happy and unflappable?”

I hate when he’s being sarcastic, but I can’t blame him. I know I’ve been a shitty submissive the past week, and God knows I won’t magically get better. But the idea of seeing Grigory has my stomach tied up in all kinds of twisted knots, and I can’t see how we’re supposed to work things through.

By talking?

Grigory having a sensitive talk seems as likely as me growing wings.

Markus moves to leave and turns in the doorway. “And one more thing, I told Grigory he may hit you somewhere else if your arms can’t handle it.” His mouth twists. “That is, if he makes sure to pick you up afterward.”

“Are you kidding me?”

Markus walks away, and I rush up from the chair to follow.
