Parker

Ava was right. I didn’t want that brownie thing. The handmade churros she got from a local food truck downtown, just a few blocks from her apartment? So much better. Handmade soul food over chef pastries any day. I’d just never admit that to Noah.

We looked odd. All dressed up, just walking down the sidewalk. But there wasn’t any parking near the food trucks, so we’d left the car at her apartment.

“This is so good.” I said with my mouth full. Classy, Parker.

“Right?” Ava grinned; mouth also full.

“Do you go to the food trucks a lot?”

She shrugged. “Only when Willow is busy. She’s not a huge fan. I bet her and Noah would have loved that restaurant, though. I think it’s way more their speed than ours.”

I let out a laugh. “You’re right.”

“Who’d you go there with that made you hate it so much, though? I mean, the food was okay, and the band was nice. Probably not worth the price tag you wouldn’t let me see.”

I let out a whispery groan.

“Oh, that bad, huh?”

“I think you’re probably the only one who knows just how bad.”

“Yikes.”

“Yeah, that’s about the only word that describes my ex accurately. Just one big human yike.”

She laughed, tossing the empty paper in her hand in a nearby trash can. And then turned to me and let out another laugh.

“You have cinnamon and chocolate all over your face.”

I felt my cheeks burn as I struggled to decide if I should wipe it on my sleeve like an animal.

“Here.” She grinned, pulling a napkin from the food truck out of her tiny purse.

I’d always wondered what it felt like when I watched this stuff in the movies. I couldn’t decide if it was more or less embarrassing than I expected. Ava’s concentration left a crease between her eyebrows as she proceeded to clean my face in a motherly way that I was sure she pretty much only used on Willow. I wondered where that big sister mojo went when they were grown.

“There.” She smiled, looking up at my eyes, and the crease faded, but the tension in the air between us did not.

“So much for a friend thing.” She whispered, and then she reached up and kissed me, and not in the timid way she had in her room.

Her hands went to the collar of my shirt, and mine went to her waist. I imagine it was quite the show for anyone walking by, but the street was pretty quiet, and maybe that’s why Ava was so confident. When she pulled away, I was basically gasping for air.

“So much for a friend thing.” I repeated, and we both laughed. “What does this mean?”

“Does it have to mean anything?” She looked down at her hands, which were resting on my collarbone. “Right now? Can we just—not define it—not label it? I do want you, Parker. I know that. I just need time to figure the rest out.”

“I can do that.” I nodded, brushing the hair from her face.

“Okay,” she sighed, fiddling absentmindedly with one of the buttons on my shirt, not meeting my eyes.
