Jake and I took off on foot with the menacing man chasing us. “Move! Get out of the way!” I called as we headed down the sidewalk.

I still had my phone in my other hand, and I held it up over my shoulder so it would hopefully pick up this crazy man chasing us. People moved as they saw us coming, but when they noticed the slimeball chasing us, some of them screamed. Then I noticed the sound of sirens racing toward us.

I slowed, pausing to see if we were still being chased, or if the police had arrived. It certainly sounded like there was a bunch of them nearby. I glanced behind us and realized the lunatic wasn’t anywhere around. I blew out a breath and stopped.

“Carly, come on,” Jake said, tugging on my hand.

“No, it’s okay. We need to go back. The cops are there,” I directed his attention back the way we’d come.

We walked back, my head on a swivel as I assessed everyone we passed for threats. I didn’t see the asshole with the bowie knife anywhere. I headed for the crashed car where a group of cops were standing around.

“Ma’am, you need to stay clear of the accident.”

“It wasn’t an accident, it was a maniac trying to kill us,” I said to the officer.

He gave me a look of disbelief. “Look, there is no one in the car. The driver took off. Probably some drunk who got confused. It happens. We have a tow truck coming. If you have a car in the area, I suggest you return to it and move along.”

“But—”

“Ma’am, we have a job to do. Please move along.”

I rolled my eyes and took Jake’s hand again as we headed for my car. “We’ll just go to the station and talk to Detective Abrahms again. I have video evidence this time.”

It didn’t take long to get there. I marched over to the front desk and demanded to see Detective Abrahms. We had to wait twenty minutes, cooling our heels on the bench with a few criminals who were handcuffed to the back of it. I pulled Jake close to me, not letting him anywhere near them. Finally, we were directed back to the detective’s desk.

“Ms. Michaelson, why are you here?”

“That maniac who tried to run Jake over just tried to run me off the road. He crashed his car and then came after us with a knife.” I pulled up the video and handed it to him.

The detective reluctantly took the phone and watched the video. “This is all circumstantial evidence. You have no video of the sedan chasing you. All you have is this person who clearly doesn’t want to be filmed, which is his right, charging at you to get you to stop. It could all be staged for all I know.”

I looked at him with disbelief. “Are you fucking kidding me?” I growled. “He’s got a bowie knife!”

The detective shrugged. “They aren’t illegal.”

I grabbed back my phone and glared at him.
