worth, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, have all been anthologized extensively; they’ve been the subject of biographies on multiple occasions; their swarm of correspondence has been published again and again; and their works have rarely been out of print. A smattering of titles addressing the wives, daughters, and sisters of these eminent men have also appeared (a notable example is Kathleen Jones’s A Passionate Sisterhood), but however important these women were to their male counterparts, their own contributions to literature have been marginalized, or condemned as “minor.”

S ARA C OLERIDGE, BORN AT G RETA H ALL, HAS UNFORTUNATELY suffered the latter fate. Living in the colossal shadow of her father, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and burdened by Victorian England’s strict code of female conduct, even percipient young Sara, who by the age of twenty-two had published two books and acquired the full use of six languages, couldn’t escape the overarching demands of womanhood. Her work correspondingly reflects a person beleaguered by interruptions. It’s not epic or grandiose, like that of George Eliot or Charlotte and Emily Brontë, for that would have required exactly the kind of long, undisturbed hours she didn’t have. Instead, Sara Coleridge’s writings consist mostly of essays, translations, introductions, appendices, and poetry—things that could be written in short bursts during her off-hours—as opposed to novels. (The one novel she did write, however, would become her most lasting contribution.) Many weren’t even original: she spent eighteen years of her life editing and repackaging her father’s work.
