CHAPTER (34)
LET THE COYOTES HAVE THE COYOTES
LANCE REACHED OVER AND TOUCHED MOLLYâS HANDS.
âWeâll find her, Molly,â he promised, âbut I donât want you along. Itâs too dangerous.â
His eyes moved to Private Most. âBilly, you ride back with Molly to the wagons. Get Badger. Iâm going to start following them, and Badger can track me. And if he canât see tracks, that mule of his will smell them.â
For once, Molly didnât argue. The two walked their horses slowly at first. When they were a distance out, both spurred them and took off.
Lance was worried as he watched Molly ride out of sight. He hoped that OâMalley would find a protected spot and hole upâsomeplace that could be defended. Molly was right though. They did need to find the girl, and it needed to be soon.
He mounted his horse and slowly eased down the hill. The mustangâs ears were pricked, and it picked its steps carefully as it went down and over the rocks. The two men were out of sight but Lance still took his time. He really didnât want to come up on them until Badger was there to back him up. Before long, he was in a dry creek bed surrounded by scrub trees and bushes.
Lance could hear voices coming from ahead. He stepped down from his horse, removed his spurs and hooked them on the saddle horn. He ground-tied his horse and squatted down to wait for Badger. The sound of the menâs voices carried back to him, but he couldnât hear what they were saying. He was just starting to get antsy when his horse pricked its ears, and looked back down the trail. Lance grabbed his horseâs nose to stop the whinny just as Badger and Billy came into view, walking their animals carefully. As they stepped down, Billy tied his horse to a tree while Badger dropped Muleâs reins.
Lance looked at Badger and in a quiet whisper asked âIâm not sure how many there are. Any ideas?â
Badger grinned with a wicked look in his eyes. âI say we send Mule in and foller behind. He cin be tame as a baby anâ then turn on âem when I give âim the signal. We cin foller along. His walkinâ anâ snufflinâ will help cover the sound of us boys sneakinâ up on âem.â
Lance grinned and nodded.
âI sure am glad you are on our side, Badgerâand Mule too.â
Badger took Muleâs head in his hands and talked to him. Then he pointed down the trail and waved his arms. Mule started towards the outlawâs camp. He walked, then stopped. He smelled the ground and snorted. Then he walked farther, brushing the trees as he went by. The three men followed silently behind, staying in the cover of the small trees.
The camp ahead of them became quiet. âWhoâs out there?â a voice asked loudly.
Mule continued to walk with his head down, smelling the trail.
A man stepped out in front of Mule and Mule stopped with his ears pricked forward.
âHey boys, itâs just a mule.
