Ruby and Nick both heard voices at the same time. It was Boyd, calling out for Kristen. Boyd and his men had stopped half a football field away. They couldn’t see them, and at first she thought that Boyd was shouting that they were being tracked, but then she realized that Boyd was trying to appeal to Kristen. Had he seen her?

They took a couple steps back, to avoid being seen. Jason looked at his dad as if to ask what they were going to do about the situation, and Lance Jackson froze, his hand on the butt of his gun. Good thing, because Boyd’s people might just shoot first, but she still shook her head at him and motioned down with her palms, the universal sign for stay calm.

Based on Boyd’s tone and the few muffled words she heard, he hadn’t seen or found them, but was following their path. While his frustration was clear, Boyd’s people felt they were gaining on the kids.

They couldn’t be certain when the men started walking again, so they stayed put for a few minutes.

Nick tapped her on the shoulder and signed, “The kids are ten minutes ahead.”

How he knew that—if she understood him correctly—was pretty good. She knew they were gaining, but didn’t know how big a lead they had.

She feared Boyd would find them first. She stepped close to him and whispered, “Is there a way to get around Boyd?”

“The left is too steep, but if we go to the right, we might be able to parallel them if we hoof it.”

She nodded; good plan. If they could get to the kids first and hide, putting distance between them and Boyd, that would buy them time to turn around and get out of here before the storm worsened. Already, the wind was whipping up the snow. Pretty soon, tracking the kids would be impossible.

They picked up the pace, the detective staying about ten paces behind them, seeming to be struggling to keep up. If he fell farther back she’d have to walk with him or he’d lose sight of them, which could be deadly.

Suddenly Nick stopped. He was staring ahead. A moment later, she saw what he saw.

Two people walking toward them. One much shorter than the other.

Kristen and Ryan.
