The first page of an important letter from Eddington to Dyson, in which he acknowledged receipt of the news that the four-inch plates agreed with Einstein’s prediction and with Eddington’s own results from the Principe plates. This followed the earlier news of the disagreement between the Principe data and the result obtained from the Sobral astrographic plates. Note the key phrase “not only because of theory,” in which Eddington acknowledged his theoretical prejudice but indicated that he saw no way to reconcile his measurements with those previously reported by Dyson, based on the astrographic plates.
