Chapter 16
Joy
âMorning.â
Joy shifted her gaze from the computer to where Robert stood lounging in her office doorway. This was not how she wanted to start her Monday. Theyâd been staying out of each otherâs way, only communicating when necessary, until last Friday. âGood morning.â
âHow was your weekend?â
âFine.â
âHave you thought about what I said?â
Sheâd thought about it nonstop but had no intentions of telling him that. âSome.â
Robert pushed off the doorframe, came over to where she sat and propped a hip on her desk. âWell, itâs the only thing thatâs been on my mind. I miss you, Joy. I miss us,â he said softly.
She leaned back in her chair and exhaled deeply. âWhere is all this coming from, Robert? I havenât been able to get you to discuss our relationship for months, and now you want me to believe you miss us?â For months she had tried to push toward some kind of reconciliation, and not once had he been receptive. Now, all of a sudden, he wanted one. She searched his face, looking for somethingâanythingâthat would give a hint as to why he was so interested in their relationship after all this time. Was it the reality of her filing for divorce? Or the realization that she would no longer be there to help him run the business? Whatever the case, she still had very real reservations.
âYou were right, and I want to apologize. I shouldnât have been so selfish. I know how important your retreat spa is to you.â He gently pulled her to stand in front of him. âIâm going to do better to take care of your needs.â
Before Joy could respond, Robert covered her mouth in a deep kiss. His tongue dipped in and out of her mouth in the way that always drove her crazy. The way that always ended with them naked and indulging in the most passionate and intense sex. She could feel the solid ridge of his erection pressed against the base of her belly, and a soft pulsing began in her core.
I canât do this.
She broke off the kiss abruptly and backed out of his embrace. For months sheâd wanted this kind of connection with him, and not once had he reciprocated. Now he changed his mind? She couldnât dismiss everything heâd said and hadnât said just because he kissed her, no matter how much she missed the physical parts of their relationship. Her feelings for him had changed, and the love she once felt had waned and was all but gone.
âWhy now, Robert? For nearly a year you all but ignore me, and you want me to do what? Fall into your arms as if none of it has happened?â She shook her head. âIâm not buying it. Again, why now?â
âJoy.â Robert reached for her but didnât answer her question.
She put a hand up and shook her head but didnât say anything. She couldnât. She didnât want him to know how much she still craved his kiss, his touch. And that he still hadnât answered her told Joy everything she wanted to know.
