Chapter Ten
Roger Duckworth
Ben and Rebecca, followed by Mr and Mrs Corbett, left the sheriffâs office and five minutes later the party arrived outside the general store. Ben tethered his horse to the railings at the front of the store, Rebecca did the same with her horse and carriage, then Rebecca and the Corbett walked up the three steps onto the boardwalk and then entered the store to confront the owner. Ben walked a few steps behind them.
Roger Duckworth was standing behind the counter as they entered, and his first reaction on seeing them was to shout to the Corbetts and Rebecca.
âWhat the hell do you people think you are doing? Youâre too bloody late, now booger off, all of you.â
Ben was the last person to enter the store. Then he turned around, closed and locked the front doors behind him, then he hung the note he wrote, earlier that morning while at the Corbett ranch, to the inside of the front door window, saying. âClosed for stock-takingâ. Then looking at Rebecca, he said.
âNow we wonât be disturbed, will we, love?â
But then, when Roger Duckworth saw Ben Masterson standing there in front of him wearing his two-shooting ionâs and looking at him face to face, a timid look came over his face and it slowly turned a reddish colour while his whole demeanour changed.
This was the first time he had confronted Ben while on his own. He wanted to run but there was nowhere to run to, and subconsciously he started thinking of all the bad things he and his friends had done to Ben. But now, he was here all alone and very worried.
âHello, Roger, you do remember me, donât you? Iâm that guy you and your friends tried to hang on a few separate occasions, and one of those times you almost succeeded. You must remember.â And to remind him Ben opened up his shirt to reveal two very distinctive scars around his neck.
If Rogersâ face was red before, now it was blood red in colour.
âOh yes, I can see you remember, and then all those other things you all tried to do to me. Oh, and you still owe me for the dragging, Iâll collect that later.â
And now Rogersâ face was as white as a ghost. As he quivered in his boots âWhat do you mean âyouâll collect it laterâ?â
âWell after you do the right thing with Mr and Mrs Corbett I mean, but oh yes! I can see by your face and the way youâre shivering you do remember everything.â
And very sheepishly Roger said, âYes, I do remember, but now, Ben! What the hell do you want?â
âNot that much, Roger, just a little bit of justice. Thatâs all.â
And as the colour was slowly returning to Rogersâ face, he looked at Ben and asked, âJustice! What the hell do you mean Masterson?â
Ben then looked at him and showed him his Arizona Rangers Star. âWell, whatever I do now, Roger, will be official justice, Arizona Rangers style. And I wonât need these guns of mine.
