I thought that when one grew up nothing unpleasant would happen. Apparently nothing hurt “grown-ups.” My mother didn’t kick or scream in the dentist’s chair, nor did she bite the doctor’s fingers when he examined her sore throat. It was a blow to realize that when one grew up one had to be even braver though the pain was just as hard to bear as before—and did “grown-ups” really cry? It didn’t seem possible but it was true. That was another proof that showed that things weren’t pleasant when you grew up.
