Chapter 9
“You’d better get that.” Hawk reassembled his sweatpants and pushed off the bed. A darkness passed over his eyes.
She couldn’t talk to Patrick minutes after making love to Hawk. That wasn’t fair to either man. “Stay. I’ll talk to him later, but I do need to speak with him.” No matter what happened between her and Hawk, her relationship with Patrick wasn’t right. She dropped the phone back on the table and held a hand out to Hawk.
He jumped back on the bed. The impish grin had returned to its rightful place. “Are you going to end it with him?”
“I don’t think he loved me the right way.” His constant hovering was sweet at first, but after a while it seemed more like insecurity.
“Then why did you get engaged?”
“Because he wasn’t you.”
“Ouch.”
“By the time things ended between us I thought if I ever became involved with another man he would have to be the opposite of you.”
“How’d that work out?”
She went to the window. The cold air drifted in from the sides of the glass, and the snow continued to paint the island in strokes of white. It would take some time to dig out of this mess.
“What’s happening here is wonderful, but it’s not real life.” Guilt sat heavy on her chest. She wanted to keep parts of her life separate, and the storm could allow that for a little while, but by Monday she’d have to face her choices.
“It’s real life to me.” He grabbed her shoulder and turned her to face him. Pain deepened the lines around his mouth. Her heart hallowed out.
“Don’t you want to see how we are together after a long day at work, or when one of us is sick, or just in a bad mood?” She missed his touch but didn’t reach out to him.
“What you’re saying is you want to find out if I still go off halfcocked in those situations.”
“Can you blame me?”
“Why are you sleeping with me? Do you need to get something out of your system? Another go-‘round with the ex because he knows how to bring you to a climax.”
Was that what she was doing because her sex life had been less than stellar? If he hadn’t shown up to help her in the storm, would she have even considered calling him for another try? Fear would have paralyzed her from taking the risk. As long as she kept her distance, she would never jeopardize her heart where he was concerned. He had hurt her enough, and she believed to some degree if he really loved her, he wouldn’t have done the things he did.
“Your silence says that must be it. If you hurry, you can catch your fiancé. You don’t even have to tell him about us if you want to keep another secret from him. I certainly won’t give you away. At least you can never accuse me of that. And whatever this thing was between us, it’s over because I told you. I’m not interested in an affair.
