Chapter 6

In the car, Tony was quiet. He had started the engine, but they hadn’t moved. The radio was on soft jazz music—saxophones, which she liked. Too bad Tony seemed to have lost his good mood as he sat there in silent thought.

“I’m sorry about Caroline,” he finally said.

“No harm done. She needed to talk to you about your son. That’s an important matter.”

“There’s nothing wrong with Hunter. She didn’t come over to talk about him. What she wanted was to make you miserable. I hope you don’t feel that way.”

“Maybe a little,” Laura said. “However, my ex is very good-looking, too, but that doesn’t mean I want him back in my life.”

“Right,” Tony agreed.

“Is that true for you and Caroline?”

“Yeah,” Tony said—and he grabbed her and kissed her. She felt his warm lips on hers, and she responded, heat consuming her body as it always did when he touched her. Her arms went around him, and she caressed the hair at the nape of his neck. His hands inflamed her body, and she ached to feel them on her naked skin—but not in a car, and not in a parking lot. And not yet. It’s too soon, isn’t it?

“Tony?” she said when she could speak.

“Come home with me tonight.”

Laura’s stomach flip-flopped. She couldn’t—not with him. What would it mean? The end of everything?

“I want to make love to you,” he said. “It’s driving me crazy.”

“I’m just a challenge to you.”

“You seem to like Christmas lights. My house has some pretty impressive lighting.”

Before she could think too much about it, Laura said, “Okay.”

Tony kissed her lightly on the lips, put the car in gear, and drove away. Laura’s heart raced. What am I doing? I can’t do this. She was on her way to Tony’s house. In only a few minutes, it seemed, Tony drove through a gated entrance. The houses were huge—and all of them were decorated for Christmas on a grand scale.

“Oh, my! It’s so beautiful.”

“Yeah, the neighbors go all out,” he said. His house was three blocks down from the entrance, on a corner lot, and decorated in light blue and clear lights.

“Did you do this?” she inquired.

“No, I hired some people.”

“Well, it looks amazing. I’ve always wanted to decorate outside, but I don’t know how.”

He got out of the car and strode around to help her out. “Let’s go inside.”

Laura refused to think about what she was doing as she went with Tony to the front door of his house.

Inside the entrance, she caught only a glimpse of the darkened living room before he caressed her neck with his lips. She shivered with anticipation.

“Do you want something to drink?” he asked.

“No,” she said. “Just kiss me again.”

Tony bent his head and kissed her while his hands roamed her body. “Come this way.”

He led her up the stairs off the entryway and to a room at the end of the hall.

“I like your dress,” he said. “But now I’d like to see what’s under it.”

Laura pulled the
