Chapter 5: A Brief History of NLP
In this chapter, we’ll take a look at the origins and the history of neuro linguistic programming. Before we get into this chapter, I would like you to remember that this is not a definitive version, and I don’t think one has ever been written or will be written. This version, like many others, is a mixture of anecdotes, personal memories, facts and rumors.
It kind of fits, since we’re talking about NLP. And one of the very core principles of NLP states that the description of an event is not necessarily the complete or the only truth about it. It is simply the perception of one who is describing it. Remember, “The map is not the territory.”
So let’s start with the origin of NLP. The philosophy of NLP that is being used by millions and millions of people internationally in all walks of life was first developed in California, United States in the 1970s. Richard Bandler and John Grinder are the two people who are primarily credited for it in most accounts, but there were other people involved.
Inception
Neuro Linguistic Programming was the result of the studies that Frank Pucelik, John Grinder and Richard Bandler were conducting on three therapists, the names of whom will be revealed in the following paragraphs. They called it “behavioral modeling” at that time.
It all started when Richard Bandler and Frank Pucelik met. Frank had returned from the Vietnam War as a traumatized and lost man, and he found a friend in Richard Bandler. Bandler was a young warehouse assistant at Science and Behavioral Books, Bob Spitzer’s publishing company. As they both started to become close friends, they decided to help each other rebuild their lives by copying the therapeutic approaches found in the transcripts and tapes of Bob Spitzer, most notably those of Fritz Perls, the founder of Gestalt Therapy. At first, they were not doing it for any theoretical reasons. They only did it to improve their own lives and used what they observed to be working best.
As students of psychology at the University of California, the two of them started practicing Gestalt Therapy with a group. They were joined by John Grinder, a young linguistics professor. in one of their sessions. He approached them with some observations and questions, and this was the beginning of a long, successful relationship between the three that would go on to give birth to what we know today as neuro linguistic programming.
As they started working together, they applied their collective skills and creativity in analyzing and modeling the works of people such as Fritz Perls and Virginia Satir, also known as the mother of Family Therapy. They studied the success rates of these two therapists and wanted to emulate them by finding out what accounted for their success. They also got to know Gregory
