It must have been a month, month and a half later when I received the letter. Dear Mr. Michaels, it began. My name is Maxwell Feldberg and you know my uncle.

I wanted to write you because I found your song on sheet music at the Kleinhorn Music Shop on Broadway Avenue in Manhattan, New York. My new band, the Jet Clique, learned the song in my building and played it as part of our set at our first show earlier this year in a New Jersey nightclub. I changed the instrumentation to electric guitar, electric bass, and trap drum set, as those are the instruments we have and know how to play. We played this song in Jersey, as I said, and it was well received, and so we made it part of our set and have since played it in Cincinnati, Baltimore, and here in New York. I would like permission to play the song again in future sets and to inquire about rights to record it on our forthcoming album.

I have enclosed with this letter a fifty-dollar bill, exactly ten percent of my take from this year’s performances thus far. As we are just getting started and I am trying to shed my earlier fame as a solo act, we do not yet make a great deal of money on our shows. This may change with the album. Please let me know if this is an acceptable payment for royalties in the meantime.

I would also like to know if you have any other songs that would be good for our band. Thank you and I hope to meet you in person someday soon.
