Chapter 12

The next morning, I woke in a strange room, the light blinding me. The world weighed heavily on me as if I were hung over. Sheena, the old lady, laid in the bed beside me.

“I didn’t?” Terrified, I glanced down to find myself clothed in a soft white gown. Thank God. Still feeling like a virgin, I didn’t check further. Memories of last night rushed back to me, assuring me I didn’t have sex with anyone. In my shock, I’d shifted into the mountain lion and attacked the woman who claimed to be betrothed to Wrex. My Wrex. The possessiveness I experienced in that moment remained, rumbling through my veins. She said she was his cousin? What in the inbred hell? Everything remained a furry blur after that, but a gash burned on my cheek. I touched it and saw her majestic form, scratching my whiskers. We fought all right. I fought an African Lioness. She would’ve won, but the bikers as leopards had leaped into action, saving me.

Sheena bathed me and let me sleep here for the night. Saber Ra had Wrex’s room. An abyss opened in my heart. Sheena woke up, stretched and yawned like a big cat would. Half expecting her to start licking herself, I wondered what she turned into.

“A leopard, like most folks here,” she responded to my thought as she got up. “Stay here. I’m going to go to the clubhouse to see if Papa has made a big breakfast. That Sydia hasn’t taught you a thing. You can’t shift and not recover afterwards. You wouldn’t eat a thing last night. No wonder you still carry that lesion on your cheek.”

Touching the cut, I found it felt fresh and oozy. “You mean this would’ve healed?”

“An injury inflicted while feline, during a transformation? Of course. If you would’ve eaten afterwards. May be no hope for it now.”

My brain caught up with what she’d said before. She was going to fetch me some breakfast. “We’re not at the clubhouse?”

“No. But we’re close. Still on the compound. I won’t be fifteen minutes. I’ll be back. Don’t run off.”

Feeling like a drained battery, I didn’t think I could. I promised to stay put. After finding her bathroom and cleaning myself up a bit, I lay back down in her soft bed, waiting for breakfast. It’d been only five minutes and a knock sounded. I searched out with my mind. It wasn’t Sheena. Someone furry but shielded was on the other side. Someone familiar. Lighting up, thinking it might be Wrex, I moved to answer the door. Just as good, Locus stood behind it.

Wrapping my arms around her neck, I cried into her shoulder. “You’re alive,” I whimpered.

“You’re not too happy about it,” Locus let go of me and backed away.

“What are you talking about?”

“I felt your disappointment, Ro.”

“I thought you might be Wrex at the door.”

“He’s put his spell on you, too.”

“What does that mean?”

“Nothing. You’re a cub. It’s to be expected. It’s just.” Locus frowned and shook her head.
