I was awakened by the ping of my phone. It was two in the afternoon. The room was bathed in light, and I frowned like some disturbed bear after her long winter sleep.

It was Sajid. She had watched the rushes. I rubbed my face hard, trying to knead wakefulness into it. Had she slept at all? All good, she texted. She had a list of names, and that young woman. You know the one, dark hair, petite, great presence.

I tried to review in my head the young women we’d cast, to bring up faces from the crowd, the faces lit in the forest, the lost walkers in the parking lot. When that didn’t yield any results, I opened my laptop and looked through the head shots. One of the names Sajid had given me came close enough to the description, and I wondered if she had got mixed up, thought there was another actress.

“No, damn it,” she said when I told her. “It’s not her.”

“Well, there’s no one else like that. I’ve gone through the pictures three times,” I said, worried Sajid might lash out at me.

“Really? All right. Must be me, then. Never mind.”
