Chapter 25
Joyce Akello listened to the report from Kitgum about the young man she had met a day ago, Wilbur Ochom. She planned to leave for Sudan in a few hours. She looked at the old man in front of her.
âDid you say his father was a permanent secretary or was it his uncle?â
âMadam, the young manâs father owns a big trading company and a mansion in Kololo, but the uncle, who is very close to the young man, works in the government. He is an Honorary Member of the Parliament.â
Joyce digested all this information in silence. âOkay, keep talking,â she said.
âThe young man had two other friends waiting for him at Hon Ochomâs house in Kitgum. Their names are Sam and John. Both young men are from the central province.â He paused. âI managed to talk to the housekeeper after they left, and he said something interesting. He said that he had heard the guards say that Hon Ochom himself had come up to Tororo to arrange for them to be escorted by a convoy all the way to Kitgum and Madi Opel to see Father Otim,â Mzee Francis Opio reported. (âMzeeâ is a respectful way of addressing elderly men).
âMzee, did you find out the last names of the two boys staying at Hon Ochomâs house?â she asked.
The old man shook his head. âNo, but I heard that they were going to Arua and that the convoy would take them to Pakwach.â He paused again. âWhen I was talking to the housekeeper, I found out that Hon Ochom has other houses in Gulu and even owns a soybean industry in Jinja,â the old man added.
âHow much money did you spend altogether, excluding your fee, Mzee?â she asked.
âI only spent nine thousand shillings. I stayed at my daughterâs house for the night,â the old man said quietly.
âYou did well, Mzee Opio,â Joyce said as she reached into her bag and pulled out two ten thousand shilling notes and gave them to him.
âThank you, Madam, thank youâ¦â he said, trying to kneel down.
âDonât do that, Mzee. Just go. When I need you, I will call you. Just remember our silence code,â she said, and then Mzee left through the back door.
Joyce reached for her gin and tonic. She was busy separating the useful information from the trash. By now the young man, Wilbur, had arrived in Arua. That was all fine with her as long as she didnât lose too much time.
Nyati Okello had sent a message to the LRAâs camp asking the black Arabs to wait for some days for new business. They would arrive at the camp sometime tomorrow morning. She had to act quickly. Unfortunately, she had been informed that Nyatiâs group had been caught in an ambush with the Ugandan Army, and was wiped out, so she wasnât sure how to contact the rebel camp. She was still deep in thought when Steven arrived.
âWhat is it, Steven?â she asked without looking at him.
âMadam, the Assistant Commander managed to escape and is in the H-B safe house.
