After Sister Promise went to the drugstore to tell Magnus’s parents about us, his father made him kneel in gravel for two hours in the blazing sun with his hands up. Magnus said he would have fainted if his mother hadn’t rescued him. So now we both had to rush home after school to avoid getting into trouble. I was certain that my whole family, led by Sister Promise, had positioned spies in school and around town to watch my every move. But at least we had more time to devote to schoolwork. The exams were in a few months, and we were all attending extra classes. We often left campus at around 5 p.m. and had another hour of extra classes before school began at 8 a.m. I was constantly sleepy and panicked. Just when we thought we had made headway, someone showed up with new appor: an old exam question that we had overlooked, a new textbook written by someone at WAEC, a math set with mathematical formulas printed on the metal case that we could take into the exam hall. Everyone, even the teachers, was in a state of panic that was contagious. I called my father and asked that he buy me a new calculator and math set and that he pay for extra classes outside of what the school was offering.

“When are you going to do the classes, don’t you close from school at five p.m.?” he asked over the phone.

“It will be on Saturday and Sunday.”

“How can you have extra classes every day? Are you a machine?”

“I can do it.”

“That is a waste of money. Study by yourself.”

I immediately told my grandmother what he’d said, and she gave him a tongue lashing like no other. He sent the money that week and I joined Shine and Robert for two hours of extra classes on Saturday and Sunday at the EP School. They told us that anyone who attended those classes was guaranteed acceptance into the secondary school of their choice.
