CHAPTER 15. LAKE

The moon shines on the lake in the middle of the forest. I walk along the path alone to the edge of the lake. I stare into the still surface of the lake and think that I see my reflection but then notice that the details in the reflection are not me and I realise it is not me but Ingrid.

I reach into the lake and immediately connect with Ingrid’s listless body and pull her up from the lake. She is heavy and a large amount of dark water falls from her mouth onto the rushes. I pull her onto the grass on the side of the lake and perform mouth to mouth on her until she finally gasps and opens her eyes but they are black and shiny. She stretches out her hands and I instinctively move backwards.

“Hello?” she says.

“Ingrid, it’s me,” I say.

“Ash, what are you doing here?”

“I came looking for you,” I say, “What happened to you? What’s happened to your eyes?”

“I fell into the water,” Ingrid says.

“How long have you been down there?” I say.

“A long time,” Ingrid says and her eyelids close and she looks like she is going to faint.

“Ingrid, don’t go,” I say.

I gasp as she closes her eyes and I open mine and start staring at the ceiling of my room. The glow of the streetlights provides a slight amount of light for the ceiling. I feel a slight heaviness at the end of the bed. I feel a shock and gasp as I realise there is a dark figure sitting at the end of the bed, hunched over and motionless.

“What do you want?” I say in a panic.

The figure does not respond. I pick up my phone and shine the phone at the figure.

“What do you want?” I say again.

The figure turns to me. It is Ingrid but her eyes are closed.

“Ingrid?” I say.

Ingrid opens her eyes but they are black and water flows through her eyes onto the floor.

I try to scream but no sound comes out of my mouth. I open my eyes and I am in my bed looking up at the ceiling of my room. I check my watch and it is just after midnight. At least five more hours I have to endure I think.

I do not feel like sleeping so reach for my phone from the bedside table and go onto Facebook. There are the usual posts but then I notice amongst the usual humdrum gossip, a strange post from someone I did not know named Eusapia:

‘riding riding riding

minos minos minos’
