A scream roused her from her doze, followed by splashing farther up the river. She raised herself on her elbow to see what was going on. A quick glance showed the sun high in the sky and the beach deserted. Everyone must have returned to their Segments. Wind whipped the sand into a frenzy, limiting what she saw of whoever was in trouble in the water.
Samira ran toward the river. Whoever it was struggled against the current, dragged along by the swift water. Arms flailed. Was that a tail? She wasnât sure what color robes they wore, but she was almost certain they werenât the yellow gold of Tindersands. Which meant they belonged to another family. Was it worth the risk to herself to attempt to rescue someone from another family? Family was the heart of life, after all.
The child stayed underwater for longer this time. If she didnât act soon, then it would be too late. In a second, Samira judged their movement. She waded into the water, pushing her power through the crystal on her forehead. The cool water was a relief after the scorching sun. As soon as she could, she pushed off from the river floor, allowing the current to draw her closer to the other child.
She grabbed them with one arm and spun them onto their backs. A girl, pale and scared.
âWeâre going to swim together, okay? Heading across the current to there. Keep your feet up and kick.â She pointed further down the beach, because theyâd need to move diagonally across the current.
The other girl nodded, wet hair stuck to her face. She lay in the crook of Samiraâs arm, clutching something tightly. Her emerald-green robes made Samiraâs heart sink. That meant she was from the Blazegrass family. And they werenât getting on well with Tindersand at the moment. Not that any of the Families ever worked together for long.
Slowly the two of them moved across the current. Samira used the power of her crystal to cut through at a tighter angle than theyâd have been able to achieve on their own power. She worked with the water, bending it to her will, not fighting against it. That was how she performed so well. The power filled her, rushing through to manipulate the water they flowed through.
Soon they were out of the current. Able to stand, Samira helped the girl up, too. A head shorter than her, she had a toothy grin. Curls of black hair stuck out the sides of her green headdress. She cradled a small dog near her chest. With one black and one white ear, he had a friendly look.
âThank you.â She held the dog up. âHenk fell into the water, and I couldnât lose him.â She sniffed. âI just didnât realize how strong the current was.â
Samira looked down at her. âWhereâs your headband? Or donât you have a crystal yet?â In Tindersand all children received a crystal as soon as they entered the Hall of Childhood, but maybe other houses did things differently.
