Later, though, especially given the extremely consequential news events near the close of the 2016 presidential campaign, I wondered if my decision had been a selfish one. Certainly, it was driven in part by my desire to move forward to the next challenge—and not to be unemployed for even a short time. Living in New York City was not something I wanted to do without a steady paycheck. But maybe I should have simply waited. I consoled myself with the knowledge that even if I had served every minute of my four-year term, I still would have been gone from the Times by October 2016, a particularly crucial moment in the presidential campaign news cycle. That was when FBI director James Comey decided to reopen the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email practices, and when the Times overplayed that story, giving over the entire top of its front page to it just days before the presidential election.

At any rate, I harbored no illusions about being irreplaceable. I knew there were plenty of journalists out there who could do the public editor job as well or better than I had. Still, it was gratifying, and humbling, to hear how much readers had appreciated my work.

My departure had brought what one of my Times assistants, Jonah Bromwich, called “a standing ovation.” One reader, whose handle was Dotconnector, contributed a comment on my last column: “What readers want most from the Times is for it to be true to its oft-stated values, and no one has ever given voice to our concerns about that more effectively than Ms. Sullivan. There simply never has been a more devoted—or prolific—reader advocate anywhere.” I smiled at Dotconnector’s allusion to the Carly Simon song “Nobody Does It Better.”
