Twenty-Three

I slept well last night. I’ve woken up refreshed. The sleeping pills work a treat. My mouth feels like I’ve been sucking cotton wool all night, even though I brushed my teeth twice after my shower.

Mum got up early with Clara and took her to playgroup. Today I feel like I could conquer the world, but for now, I need to settle for visiting Mr Leighton again and picking up our new lives. Starting with a trip to the sports centre to change my identity for a few hours.

Mr Leighton welcomes me with the same gentlemanly gestures and offers me tea. He doesn’t fail with his attire today, and I can’t help but smile at him. Red chino style trousers, a plain royal blue shirt, buttoned right to his neck. I wonder how he’s able to breathe? The same cream Arran sweater vest finishes the look.

I like Mr Leighton. I wonder how his wife died? If they had children? Or if he devotes his life to helping others because he’s alone. I think he would’ve made an illustrious father. You can just tell sometimes, can’t you?

‘There you are, my dear, please take a seat,’ Mr Leighton tells me, his manners impeccable, and I imagine him pulling out the chair for his wife at dinner, letting her sit first before he did.

‘Thank you. You have a wonderful home, Mr Leighton. I was looking forward to seeing it again.’

It truly is wonderful. Mum would have a field day in here. I wish I could have brought her here under different circumstances. The whole place screams Antiques Roadshow. Yeah, I’m not ashamed, I watched it. I was a geek.

I sip my tea and notice the plastic folder on the coffee table in front of us. If I wasn’t feeling nervous before, I am now. That plastic folder holds our new lives. Amazing, isn’t it? How it only takes two days to get someone a new identity and how cheap it is.

‘The tea is very nice, thank you, Mr Leighton.’ It really is, it’s not Tetley, that’s for sure. Some fancy morning tea, I expect.

‘I know you’re on a tight schedule dear, so I’ll get right to it if that is okay with you?’ Mr Leighton asks, smiling, a warm, friendly smile, and I know he is sincere. He continues, ‘In the folder, there are two new passports, for yourself and your daughter. A driver’s licence, British of course. I can’t have you as an American citizen, your accent is too strong.’

American?

Am I going to America? It’s never occurred to me; I have no idea where I’m going. Albert said he would reveal all nearer the end of the week. One step at a time.

I nod in agreement. Born and bred in Scotland, but I always say my accent is more British than Scottish.

‘There are also birth certificates, national insurance details, and your photography qualifications changed into your new identity.’

Wow, how did he get those? How did he know
