Chapter 14

December 30

Jesse woke, opened his eyes, and blinked. Sunlight glinted diamond-bright off the frosted bedroom window and threw small rainbow triangles onto the wall. He hadn’t turned the heat up last night, and the air on his face was cool while under the blankets he was toasty. It was a delicious contrast. He could get used to River’s Sigh B & B. Staying in Jo and Callum’s guest bedroom felt like a proper holiday—or maybe it was the company he was keeping. Either way, he stretched lazily and stayed put a moment, enjoying the warmth and softness of both the comfortable bed and his recent memories. How on earth could he have only known Rita Sophia Printz for four days? It felt like four years—and like four minutes. Sophie. Her name was like music in his brain. Yet she would leave? She’d go? That didn’t seem possible either.

Those thoughts got him out of bed fast. It was already the thirtieth. She was leaving on the fourth. They had no time to waste, and he’d figured out how they should spend the day. He couldn’t wait to see her face when he asked her.

“Tobogganing?” she said after a pause. Her face was soft and lightly creased with sleep, like she’d just crawled out of bed. Maybe she’d been sleeping in when he knocked. Suggesting she go back to bed—with company—was suddenly way more appealing than the idea of careening down ice-ridden hills at a hundred miles an hour, but it was too late. She shook her head, and the action instantly dislodged her sleepiness. “That sounds fantastic!”

So tobogganing it was. He stopped by his sister Maggie’s house and borrowed her kids’ snow toys, leaving Sophie in the truck with the engine running. His niece and nephews clamored to go with him, and were only slightly mollified when he promised to take them on their own again soon.

“You actually have a flesh and blood woman in your pickup and she’s going sledding with you?” Maggie didn’t even try to be subtle. She leaned out the door and craned her head, trying to see into his passenger seat. The windshield had fogged over, however, thwarting her attempt to spy.

“Yes, she’s real, thank you very much. It’s kind of awkward to bring a blow-up girlfriend to a tobogganing party. They pop when they get too cold.”

He thought the blow-up part was the line she’d focus on. But as ever, he didn’t have a clue.

Maggie’s eyebrows shot up so high they disappeared into her thick bangs. “Wait a minute, your girlfriend? She’s not just a living, breathing female, you actually think of her as your girlfriend?”

Jesse shook his head. Why had he thought this was a good idea? He should’ve stopped at one of the big box stores, spent a hundred bucks, and spared himself the third degree. “I don’t know why you think it’s headline news that I’m with a woman, and no, she’s not my girlfriend. That was a joke about—ah, never mind.
