"Yes, of course." Andrew started to say more, but Henry was suddenly gone, striding back toward the street. Andrew waited a minute, then retraced his steps, not quite knowing what to think. When he and Henry had been stationed in France, in an observer detachment that Andrew had commanded, their relationship had been typical for a junior and a senior officer. But then Andrew had rushed home when his father had taken ill, and Henry assumed command. Thanks partly to information picked up from Gisela von Kirchberg, Henry had since enjoyed one success after another, and except for a six-month stint back in the United States, he had been stationed in Europe ever since. Andrew had visited him once, to arrange financial help for his mothers shipping business in Independence, and he had been astonished and impressed by the change in his friend. It was completely understandable why Henry was now the youngest captain in the army. Walking back to his apartment, Andrew wondered what kind of life Henry now led.

At midnight, under the cover of darkness and with the streets silent and empty, Henry was more relaxed and greeted Andrew warmly. The two men spoke for a while of family and friends, although Andrew, considerate of Henry's sensitivities, avoided the subject of Cindy. He did explain his strange relationship with the von Hofstettens, admitting he was in love with Lydia. He recounted in detail everything she had told him about the dukes three visitors and their apparent connection to Kurt Gessell. Henry did not react, other than to ask a few questions about Gessell, which Andrew could not answer, and inquire about which taverns were frequented by the city's German exiles.

Before they parted, Henry surprised Andrew by mentioning that he had heard of the von Hofstettens and had met the Countess von Lautzenberg. The count, he added meaningfully, had a reputation as a formidable man— implying that Andrew had best watch his step. Then, again to Andrew's surprise, Henry asked about Cindy, explaining that he had learned of her present circum-
