Having never been surfing, Trina wasnât sure what to bring other than sunscreen and a towel. Kat, on the other hand, had a whole beach bag. Trina pointed at it as they walked toward the car. âWhat are you bringing? Youâre making me think I forgot something.â
âProbably too much,â Kat said. âI brought a change of clothes, since weâre going out to eat afterwards.â
âOh.â Trina was wearing shorts and a T-shirt over her bikini. Sheâd just figured sheâd put them back on after she dried off. âShould I have brought clothes, too?â
Kat shrugged and unlocked the car. âUp to you. You want to run back up and get something?â
Trina stood there, trying to decide. She could grab a bag and throw a sundress in it. Maybe a little makeup bag. A hair tie. âIâll be right back. Iâll hurry.â
âOkay,â Kat said. âIâll get the AC going.â
Trina ignored the elevator and took the stairs, using her key to get in the front door.
Willie peered at her from the living room. âChange your mind?â
âNo, just forgot some stuff.â Trina got her beach bag and tossed in her sparkly black flipflops along with a black tank-style sundress that had pink and red flowers on it. She added a red hair clip, then dug through the rest of her accessories.
Into a smaller bag she put some jewelry: big red hoop earrings and two matching bracelets. Into a cosmetics bag, she put the bare essentials: mascara, eyeliner and a hot pink lipstick, which could double as a cream blush. She tossed in a bronze eyeshadow stick, too, just for good measure.
She started out of the room, then realized if she wasnât wearing her bikini anymore, sheâd need underwear. That went in the bag. Finally, she headed for the door. âBye, Mimi.â
âBye, honey.â
Trina hustled down the steps and jumped in the car. âOkay, sorry.â
âNo problem.â Kat got the car moving and they were off to meet the boys. âAre you nervous about learning to surf?â
âNah. Are you? I think itâll be fun.â
âIâm not great at sports. I just donât want to make a fool of myself, you know?â
Trina nodded. âI donât think Alex expects you to be great at it on your first attempt.â
âYeah, probably not.â Kat smiled.
A few minutes later, they pulled into the parking lot at Carlton Fiske park, the same place theyâd come for the sandcastle building contest. The boys were already there, unloading surfboards from Alexâs truck and Milesâs SUV.
The girls got out, grabbed their stuff, and went to meet them.
Trina leaned up and gave Miles a kiss on the cheek. âHiya.â
âHi.â He smiled. âReady to catch some waves?â
âI hope so.â
He glanced over at Alex, then said, âWe have something for you guys.â
âYeah?â Kat said. âYou mean a surfboard?â
Alex shook his head and took a plastic shopping bag out of his car. âSomething else. We got you each a rash guard.â
Trina didnât love the sound of that. âSurfing gives you a rash?â
Miles snorted. âIt can. From laying on the waxed surface of the board.
