Chapter Seventeen
'You're the famous Jo,' Adam said, giving her one of his devilish smiles as they met in the hall just before lunch.
At least he hoped it was a devilish smile and that it didn't look as if he had indigestion or something. Perhaps he shouldn't have nipped into the kitchen and tasted the mixture for the carrot cake Penny was making for afternoon tea.
Jo wasn't exactly what he'd expected but she was pretty, had curves in all the right places, and a look about her that shouted fun. Or perhaps that was just wishful thinking. He could definitely use some fun right now. Christmas had been chaotic, although he'd enjoyed it more this year than the usual, quiet Christmases they spent at Wynter House. Until Boxing Day, that is.
He'd thought the village flood, and everyone moving to Wynter House had been a massive upheaval. Discovering he and Rafe had a sister and a niece had exceeded that by far and the truth was, he wasn't handling the news as well as he'd hoped he would.
Rafe seemed to be coping with it far better. But then Rafe could cope with anything. He always had. That was one of the reasons Adam admired his brother so much. No matter what life threw at him, Rafe would take it in his stride. Even heartbreak. He may bend, but he wouldn't bow or buckle. Rafe was strong, determined and had a sense of duty and responsibility that Adam couldn't hope to emulate. Even if he wanted to. Which frankly, he didn't.
Rafe took after their mother and grandmother in many ways. Adam leaned more towards their father. He wasn't weak. At least he didn't think he was. But change and upheaval bothered him in a way it never seemed to affect Rafe. And yet commitment bothered him far more. Especially where women were concerned. The thought of spending his life with one woman to the exclusion of all others brought him out in hives. Marriage wasn't something that appealed to him. At least that meant that, unlike his father, he would never break any marriage vows.
Anyone who met Adam and Rafe always thought that Adam was the fun-loving, cheerful and optimistic brother and Rafe was serious, moody and downright miserable at times. But nothing could be further from the truth.
Adam needed to have fun. He got so easily bored. He was rarely content with life or anything it offered. When he was in London, he longed to be at Wynter House, yet when he was here, he longed for the nightlife of London.
For most of his life he had put on a cheerful exterior to hide the fact that he felt he never quite shaped up to Rafe in Olivia's eyes. He wanted people to like him and say good things about him. He always hoped the future would be better than the past, but he never really did anything to make it so.
Rafe, on the other hand, found joy in the simple pleasures of life.
