“Clyde.” He wakes up to the Doctor’s voice.

“Clyde,” the Doctor repeats. Clyde is aware of where he is, of what has happened, but can’t get his eyes open, not right away. The echoing sounds of the lab tell him he’s come through the procedure alive. He doesn’t know if it’s worked, but if it has, he is immortal. If he takes care of his body, keeps from destroying his body, he will live forever. His brain, his heart, and his lungs will never stop working. They will forever run with the power of the devices the Doctor has implanted in him.

“Oh, look. See, he’s waking up, he’s smiling,” Creighton says. Then silence, as they watch him, waiting for him to open his eyes and acknowledge them.

He wants to open his eyes, but they feel glued; he cannot open them. Clyde feels his fingers move, but when they do, they do not fully follow the actions his brain is telling them. There is—oh shit—there is a delay. No, no, it can’t be. Clyde’s eyes flutter open five or six seconds after he tried to open them.

“Clyde.” the Doctor looks down at him. “How do you feel?”

I feel okay, Clyde wants to say. But I’m sore. My head and my chest. No words leave his mouth. He waits a second or two and then hears his voice.

“I…feel…okay…But…I’m…sore…my…head…and…my…chest.” Clyde’s stomach drops when he realizes what this means.

“Shit.” Creighton slams his hand against the metal table, the metallic bang echoes throughout the lab.

“No, no, it may be okay, Edmund. We need to wait. I was expecting this might happen,” the Doctor says. “Clyde, you’re regulating your own body, but the devices are assisting you. The extra electrical charge from the devices inside you is creating the delay that we see in the reanimates. But your brain is also producing its own electrical current. Once your brain becomes accustomed to what is happening, it should adjust the electric charge it needs, and your body will adjust and return you to normal. It should only take a few seconds.”

Clyde thinks about nodding. A few seconds later, he nods.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell either of you about this possible side effect, I didn’t think it necessary to needlessly worry either of you. Especially you, Clyde. You had enough to worry about leading up to the procedure.”

Clyde nods again. He doesn’t want to speak, not until his body and his brain get back in sync. The Doctor thinks it should be for a short time. It’s only been a minute or so, and Clyde already hates the feeling. It’s the same feeling the reanimates go through, but there is no hope for them. He understands why they are restless. Their bodies are slower, much slower, but their minds are working as fast as they always did. The restlessness he feels inside him is almost unbearable. He hopes the feeling and the effect won’t last much longer. He is trapped, trapped in his own body. He may be able
